It's not that exciting, but that's a good thing - it works very well and is very similar to a stock experience!

Does a VPN used on a smartphone with Wi-Fi disabled (mobile data only enabled) provide any sort of protection?

I've never completely understood this, but I think the answer would probably be "no," although I'm not sure. Usually when I leave the house I turn off wifi and just use mobile data (this is a habit from my pre-VPN days), although I guess I should probably just keep it on since using strange Wi-Fi with a VPN is ok (unless someone...

As a gay pirate assassin I encourage everyone to watch that Tom Scott video

smeg ,

and that's why they invented Docker 👈😬👈

smeg ,

Steal lore from Shadowrun, they've already fleshed out the details for you!

smeg ,

Same, I'm wondering what this brings that you can't already do

smeg ,

Android sandboxes apps anyway, what GrapheneOS does is allow you to install Google Play Services in a sandbox so you can use it without granting it the admin-level permissions it usually demands.

I have often though about what ridiculously high rolls in 5e would look like. I think rolling a 30 in Performance would be Freddie Mercury at Live Aid.

Would Lemmy Benefit from Implementing Polls? ( slrpnk.net )

A popular way of dealing with discussions, and familiar to most people, I assume. As far as I see it, adding a poll system to Lemmy is a good way to enhance user engagement. I'm not really aware if this has been a topic before or not, tried looking it up but didn't see much juice on the topic, so thought I'd spark it up....

smeg ,

How do you store who has voted and what the results of the poll are without storing results on a server? Ultimately it's just the same sort of data as who upvoted and downvoted what, right?

smeg ,

Some clients let you do that

smeg ,

Would that work to obfuscate up/downvotes in general?

smeg ,

I'm using Summit, it can toggle off links, texts, pictures, and video posts

smeg ,

Speak for yourself, my phone is the most secure device I own!

smeg ,

I don't think it's about the cost of the 3.5mm jack itself, it's about the space it takes up. "Thinner and lighter" as a goal means removing chunky things they don't think are necessary. Also waterproofing maybe?

smeg ,

I've got no idea of the legitimacy of the claim, it's just what the manufacturers claim. Likewise, they assume people want "thinner and lighter", presumably because that's what Steve Jobs said. It's all just trying to make the devices appeal to the mass market.

smeg ,

Depends if the shareholders are all hedge funds wanting to pump-and-dump or if they're actual investors interested in making the company better!

smeg ,

so that most minor combat encounters end after like 5 turns max

5 turns or 5 rounds? 5 turns means some players are only getting one turn which might not be great fun. 5 rounds is probably longer than most combats I've ever had!

smeg ,

Assuming I actually wanted to keep my job and not just open source everything? Probably buy Paizo and mend the schism, then build a d&d which is streamlined and friendly to beginners but can have 1001 extensions and options for the keenos. Then maybe buy roll20 and make it into the ultimate virtual tabletop; the rules can be free and the books can be cheap if you're making a good enough VTT that people will want to pay for a subscription!

smeg ,

Do you have very small hands? The 3DSXL aches my hands if I play for too long but I've never had any problems with the Switch, or even a GBA.

smeg ,

The crazy one is when you see someone who owns both a PlayStation and an Xbox!

smeg ,

It's fine to not want the dark tone, classic d&d heroic fantasy is much more of a feel-good vibe and there's nothing wrong with liking that. There are a lot of Forged in the Dark games (i.e. Blades hacks) with different themes, I imagine a load are much less dark!

smeg ,

Yeah I would think removing stress and trauma would fundamentally change the game into something else, but you could still reskin them to change the tone. For example stress could be your mana, and traumas could be your soul ascending, or something like that in a heroic fantasy setting; the mechanics are still the same but it doesn't have the same dark vibe.

Runners in the Shadows, I've not played it but I've seen comments describing it as 'Shadowrun without the crunch'

Runners in the Shadows, I've not played it but I've seen comments describing it as 'Shadowrun without the crunch'

smeg ,

If you do play it then I'd love to hear what it's like!

smeg ,

Misleading headline, this seems to be specifically for changing media output destination. I'm assuming it could already do other controls because even my Pebble can do that!

smeg ,

I always hated the noise you got from wired headphones every time you moved, so I was very happy as soon as wireless headphones stopped being terrible. Now I only use wireless so I really don't need a 3.5mm slot, and I can use an adapter on the off chance I do. Also I use GrapheneOS so it's not like I really have a choice!

smeg ,

Researchers at fraud risk company ThreatFabric found Brokewell after investigating a fake Chrome update page that dropped a payload, a common method for tricking unsuspecting users into installing malware.

So just a classic fake update button

To protect yourself from Android malware infections, avoid downloading apps or app updates from outside Google Play and ensure that Play Protect is active on your device at all times.

Fine advice for someone who has no idea how their phone works, I suppose

smeg ,

True, if you don't already know the answer to that is "no I don't" then the answer probably is "yes you do"

smeg ,

True, but I assume most of these people aren't reading tech news!

smeg ,

Yeah, as long as I'm always able to disable it then I'm fine with it being there for the casual user

smeg ,

So it's ads on the lock screen? Didn't Amazon try that a decade ago with the subsidised Kindle Fire tablets?

smeg ,

Any idea if they still sell well compared to the ad-free ones? Presumably if they were that successful we'd have seen other manufactures copying the idea before now, right?

smeg ,

Makes sense, though I don't know if choosing a phone with all the tracking enabled is the best choice for a drug dealer

smeg ,

Interesting little article

In other words, it is activist hedge funds and modern executive compensation practices — not corporate law — that drive so many of today’s public companies to myopically focus on short-term earnings; cut back on investment and innovation; mistreat their employees, customers and communities; and indulge in reckless, irresponsible and environmentally destructive behaviors.

So I guess the publicly-owned model allows the bad shit to happen when the majority of shareholders are get-rich-quick hedge fund types then?

smeg ,

Unfortunately, I’m not sure whether it’ll be possible to still enable a legitimate, sideloaded app’s Accessibility or Notification Listener service if it’s hit with ECM restrictions. It’s possible to disable Restricted Settings for an app, so it should also be possible with ECM restrictions, but I can’t say for sure since I haven’t been able to get the feature to work yet in Android 15.

So we don't even know if this is going to be a restriction for people who know what they're doing. Pitchforks on standby, but I'd assume there must be a workaround for actual developers etc.

smeg ,

users in that in-between skill level where they know how to use a third-party app store (or how to download and install apps from a file browser) but don't know how to use adb

That knows just enough to cause trouble user is probably the kind of person who is the target for the kind of malware this fix is meant to combat. As long as those of us who want to tinker safely still have a way to do so then this is probably a net positive.

smeg ,

If an employer requires you to have a specific app then they should be providing you a device on which to use it!

smeg ,

So how do they react when you say "that app doesn't work on my phone", or if you're feeling mischievous, "I don't have a smartphone"?

smeg ,

Guess you pull out the old classic "oh, I don't have a smartphone" if you find they're being difficult about it!

smeg ,

Because it's an RPG?

smeg ,

It isn't..?

smeg ,

I guess it's a general issue with some clients presenting thumbnails for websites the same way they'd present image posts

smeg ,

You can lead a dodgy developer to a proper API spec but you can't make them use it. I think the only control we have in that situation is the Uninstall button!

smeg ,

This is a really tiny QoL feature, slow news day? That said I think it's a good idea and I probably wouldn't have known about it otherwise!

smeg ,

Aren't incubi and succubi the same creatures that just change their form to seduce the desired target?

smeg ,

Look up "primehack", it's a modded version of Dolphin emulator which is specifically for playing the Metroid Prime trilogy. Modernised controls and lots of little QoL improvements, it's my first experience of Metroid and I loved it!
