In the perfect world where you can convince your company to use anything other than MS Teams and that your family bothers to use anything that isn't WhatsApp or Telegram. Unfortunately I don't live on it 😭

Templa ,

This is cool. I switched from Winamp to Foobar2000 at some point, I don't really remember the reason.

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

It removes the proprietary part inserted when MS builds the code. This unfortunately makes other proprietary extensions useless, such as Dev Containers. You can still use the main extension marketplace by changing a .json but some MS extensions won't work at all (tried it last week).

I agree, just need to figure out how to connect to a pod using OpenSSH.

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

Unfortunately that doesn't apply when you are on your work computer and need to connect to your environment which is behind a corporate VPN. Thanks for telling me about code-server though, I'll check that definitely!

I've had this happen and did upload the selfie but I think it happened because I was blocking some extra stuff that it was flagging my account to be automated

Does anyone know of a FOSS Firewall for Windows

I currently use TinyWall Firewall, it works very well, it's small/portable, no complaints I even donated to the Dev but I would really prefer open source, also it needs to be user friendly like TinyWall so my non-tech family members can/will use it like they do with TinyWall.

@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

I knew I was going to find a comment like this and I am disappointed that I did.

It is hard for people to make transitions specially because they probably used Windows their own life. If they are asking for a FOSS firewall they most likely know they should transition to Linux at some point. There is actually no need to be the questioning person.

I use arch btw

@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

If you phrased your initial question differently or asked more details about OP's use case I think it would be completely fine. For example, they might be the "sys admin" where they live but their family members would be extremely annoyed if they tried to push Linux.

Just kind tired of the "you cannot ask for FOSS alternatives if you are using something proprietary" and ended up venting because of your comment, that's all.

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

This is Beehaw and we aim to be a nice place, right? So to me is kind of pointless this kind of discussions and I just meant to say that your comment sounded very judgemental and it could be written in a nicer way, that's all.

Edit: Check OP's new comment on the post.

Sorry you had to write this down, OP. On the internet people make a lot of assumptions. I hope you ended up getting a reply.

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

I'm never said you were violating any rules, I was just expressing my opinion. If a person asks a question you can decide if you are going to be helpful and answer that question or make an statement regarding the irony of their question, which isn't helpful at all.

You keep doing whatever you think it is best.

The only reason I stopped using my iPod was because I lost it. 🥲

It was my companion for many many years, I think I lost it in 2016 or something. I recently started considering getting another one, but I honestly wouldn't like having to install iTunes just for it.

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

I completely forgot about that! I used foobar2000 a lot back in the day, but never managed how to manage my iPod through it, it was just my main music player.

Is there a market for modified iPods? I'd love to get one already modified with the flash storage you mentioned

Templa ,
@Templa@beehaw.org avatar

I always try to keep in mind there are a lot of people that are simply unable to transition to alternative apps because they lack knowledge and time to do research on such things. What we see through videos isn't the majority of the people, it is people that make content for the majority.

People have hard times getting into more technical stuff already. Expecting people that are struggling to survive in capitalism to spend their free time learning about underground alternatives or to turn into sys admins and host their own stuff is out of touch if reality in my opinion.

Edit: just wanted to add, I wouldn't say the problem is on the people, but on big tech that predates on them

I stopped using it after I was having many crashing issues (it was from upstream, but at the time upstream was already updated and it took weeks for them to release an update). Since Mull is just Firefox with a few settings changed I decided to use regular firefox, but it seems that on Android if you are really rad about privacy you should be using Vanadium (which unfortunately is Chromium based)

Where/how to efficiently download music in bulk?

I have a relatively large collection of songs I downloaded from YouTube, one-by-one, on my Android phone. I would like to download a lot more of the songs I like, with correct metadata and without having to manually edit the album cover art, artist, and more, on my Windows PC....

Best thing in the show was the mistery of vault 31 and the solution was extremely underwhelming. I think people just need time to digest. I hate Maximus.

The pacing of Maximus part is so boring. I am honestly hoping it gets better.

Standard notes: what about don’t put all your eggs in one basket rule?

If the owner of the standard notes will now be a proton, doesn't that contradict this principle? I have a proton email account but I don't want it linked to my standard notes account. I don't strongly trust companies that offer packaged services like google or Microsoft....

I used linux intermittently in the last 15 or so years, migrating from early Ubuntu versions, to Manjaro, Pop!_OS, Debian, etc. And decided to give Arch a try just recently; with all the memes around its high entry point, I was really expecting to struggle for a long time to set it up just as I want....

    OP, you need to understand that you are leaving your confort zone and things might not work and that's okay. You can have plenty of issues with Windows as well but I think we're just trained to ignore them or assume it not the OS's fault.

    I've had this sleep issue once with Arch Limux and I think that's related with a lack of swap memory. Did you configure it?

    Regarding issues with programs that you use like Slack etc, If it takes too long, there might have something wrong. I never used Mint so I have no idea on what Pop Store is but I would go away to search for the packages on their official websites.

    If you don't have the patience to learn a new OS just don't do it. You're not obligated to do so, you're not inferior because of it and you are free to choose what is better for you. I do feel better using Linux these days because I am honestly very tired on MS making decisions on what's best and I enjoy fixing issues by myself.

    I think you wording might offend a lot of people here because Linux and open source is almost a lifestyle for a lot of people, so if you need help staying it might be more productive to calm down and elaborate on your isssues in the future.

    Templa ,
    @Templa@beehaw.org avatar

    People get offended really easily, it is really weird.

    Edit: I just read the other person comment about swap not being the case plus your distro might already configue it on install, so it might not help at all. Sorry!

    If you need information on why have Swap space you can read more about it here and here .

    In the past, when installing Linux you would create a small partition in your HD for swap memory but nowadays you can just create a swap file. I think this guide might help you.

    I don't know if English is your first language but by the way you wrote your post it was a bit negative which made me understand you were frustrated, that's why I said to calm down.

    Templa ,
    @Templa@beehaw.org avatar

    This was very informative. I am not very knowledgeable so I just assumed it might be related to swap (since I had this issue before configuring it and never again afterwards).

    I assumed sleep/suspend would work kind of the same as hibernate. Thank you for your knowledge!

    Templa ,
    @Templa@beehaw.org avatar

    Don't do it. If you're having issues figuring out stuff by yourself don't install Arch Linux. If you are already frustrated using an OS like Pop it will be much worse on Arch.

    Templa ,
    @Templa@beehaw.org avatar

    The fact you have chosen to submit this comment instead of just ignoring the post is very sad.
