This does not need to be a 8 minute video. Read your tldw instead. Thanks, OP.

Under every single LaTeX themed post there is someone suggesting typst.
Why use something open, if you can use something proprietary? /s

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

There are a lot of typos in this book. Are you looking for someone to proofread?
Great work btw

Retiring , (edited )
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

What are you using it for? Did you publish anything written in typst?
Edit: this is a genuine question.

Youtube Rant from a paying customer

I used to use NewPipe back in the days of yore. Then I got Youtube Premium since it bundled in Youtube Music as well which I used. But the former's app on mobile is a shit show. Even after paying, you are asked to tip random creators, purchase merchandise[ which are shown as actual ads below videos] and join channels to access...

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

I am still angry at google for killing Play Music. You could upload your own files, back in the day. It was a genuinely awesome and unique product that I used every single day.

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

Huh.. so you can. That’s interesting, I did not know that. Thanks.

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

You may think they would want to use all that money to make people not need to pirate things. but here we are.

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

That’s exactly it! The sad thing is that it’s more convenient to pirate than get 5+ subscriptions and an extra app on your phone to stay ahead of disappearing content.

Idk when you did it, but with the overleaf toolkit, at least the docker networking seems to be no problem. I had quite some problems with updating though. I run an outdated version at the moment because texlive gets updated faster than overleaf, which produces errors when installing the texlive full package.
Overall, also can’t recommend.

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

I see, you probably had to change the overleaf config file?
I feel it’s too much work to keep it updated and running, on my Linux server. But the official overleaf is just too slow. It struggles to compile 30 page documents, and i have several that are longer.
How does it run for you on your windows computer, with the local installation? What are the specs of your machine?

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

You are correct, LaTeX isn’t very fast in general, but my 8 core ryzen server with 8GB of ram assigned to the vm running overleaf is usually twice as fast as the official overleaf unpaid tier. The specs you listed should produce much better results than the official overleaf. This seems weird to me.

As an example, I just compiled my thesis, which is about 60 pages, lots of references, pictures, and generally a heavy document. On my server it takes about 35 seconds, the official overleaf just times out (pay or we won’t compile your document).

Why would grandma want to do that? I have set up computers for tech illiterate people with Linux quite successfully. You just tell them: „if it wants your password, you did something wrong. Never enter your password, unless you know exactly why“ Set and forget.

They are probably referring to the streaming services bit

So I'm a beekeeper and we have to continuously adapt our tools to change and predators. For the fight against asian hornets, the 3D community has been really helpfull and most of the stuff can be printed at home with a small 3D printer....

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

Drop me a message, i could design that in creo and send you any format you like. Looks like 15 minutes of work, and I love bees 😊

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

I will do that, once OP contacts me and gives me some measurements.

If you run random .pdf.something-files pm‘d to you on LinkedIn you probably shouldn’t use a computer anyway, no matter if it runs Linux or Windows…

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

What did you use Facebook for? I haven’t been on there for a decade, this is a serious question.

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t know where you are from, and what laptop you are using, but as others have said: use keyboard stickers. Just search for „colemak dh stickers [your laptop model]“

Clipshare: Copy anywhere, paste anywhere, end to end encrypted ( github.com )

Hello everyone, I would like to share my little project I’ve been working on recently. There are many awesome data sharing solutions around. However, I’ve always wanted to be able to just alt+C on one machine and Alt+P on another, clipboard is just such a handy thing! so, I finally decided to get this done. Welcome...

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

Do you really do Alt+C and Alt+P for copy paste? I usually press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

I can never remember which is which

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

This says it only detects chrome extensions, so I am not surprised it doesn’t detect your Firefox extensions. Why do you say that Firefox won’t leak extensions at all? Do you have a source for that?

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

To be fair, you can look it up on their websiteThe fact that this is something you have to consider now when buying a car is ridiculous though…

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

They offer lifetime, so it’s probably shit.

what youtube is doing is a slow easing of removing adblockers rather than an immediate one

if they outright forced us to stop day one there’d be outrage, so they instead ease us in. first a popup, then a timed popup, slowly leading to their actual goal but without the risk of an initial outrage. i know this is an extreme comparison but we’re like lambs to a slaughter

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

I gave up reddit the day apollo stopped working and I will quit youtube the day I have to see any ads whatsoever. It just frees up time to do other, more fulfilling, things.

Live Kit may be what you are looking for. Haven’t tried this myself, but it looks straight forward. You basically turn an already installed system into a live distro.

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

May I ask why you have 5+ DEs installed? And also, isn’t that quite the mess with all the dotfiles?

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

😂

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

I am thinking about .Xresources, for example, and gtk things and other files in .config. I didn’t mean the DE specific dotfiles.

I Tested an HDMI Adapter That Demands Your Location, Browsing Data, Photos, and Spams You with Ads ( www.404media.co )

An iPhone to HDMI adapter was discovered that, when plugged in, runs a program prompting users to download an app. This EZ Cast app collects extensive personal data and sends it to China for ad targeting. It requires location access, photos, and installs tracking cookies. The adapter appears designed to mimic official Apple...

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s a bit rich for a site that uses about 200 „legitimate interest“ cookies to complain about chinese practices.

Or, here’s a crazy idea: don’t shop on amazon at all.

Does "Selfhosted" mean you actually have a server at home?

I’m trying to better understand hosting a Lemmy Instance. Lurking discussions it seems like some people are hosting from the Cloud or VPS. My understanding is that it’s better to futureproof by running your own home server so that you have the data and the top most control of hardware, software etc. My understanding is that...

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

Depending on where you are, a hard drive that runs 24/7 can cost you quite a bit of money (6$/month or even more for just the hard drive). If you consider the upfront cost of a hard drive, the benefit of hosting at home gets even smaller. Nvme is where you really save money hosting at home. Personally I do both, because cloud is cheap and you can have crazy bandwiths.

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

You forgot something in your calculations, you don’t need a complete VPS for the *arrs. App hosting/seedboxes are enough for that and you can have them for very, very cheap.

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

That you probably need a VPS for, yes.

I abandoned my lifetime plex license long ago. It’s the sunk cost fallacy, some people are immune to it and others aren’t. Quite obviously some people here aren’t, because they still defend plex.

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m not sure if you are being serious, but for obvious reasons NO

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

In another comment you complained about the latest commit being made 7 years ago. Just a heads up, this project also seems pretty abandoned.

What’s really creepy is, Linus let’s his employees and wife model in underwear to peddle his merch. I mean, what’s the job description there? You are a writer and an underwear model?

Retiring ,
@Retiring@lemmy.ml avatar

You are not wrong. But with allegations of SA in the room, the fact that the pictures exist gets a bitter aftertaste.
