You can also run the game at 1080p and use FSR to upscale it to native resolution, that's what I often do on my 4k monitor.

On System Settings’ Night Light page, the time input fields for manual time mode are no longer a nightmare, because they’ve been replaced with a set of spinboxes (Natalie Clarius, Plasma 6.1)

Oh thank goodness, that page has always felt a bit weird.

Klaymore ,
@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

If you can't fix it you could try running the game inside Gamescope, it can help with weird alt+tab issues.

@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

Switched like a year ago or so, not really any difference on my AMD pc and Intel laptop. Now I need wayland for HDR on Plasma 6 so there's no way I could go back personally, as well as the great multi-monitor and fractional scaling handling.

@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

On the other hand, when I turn off my second monitor (on HDMI), all my apps stay on that screen, meaning I have to manually move them over to my main monitor where I can actually see them.

And if my DisplayPort monitor is off and everything's on my second monitor, when I turn the main one back on all the windows go back to where they used to be (al least on Plasma Wayland).

You mean... a prompt that needs a second click to run the program?

Klaymore ,
@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

In the developer settings I set all the animations to twice as fast (half as long) so they feel snappier.

I've heard you can say "octopodes" as well

Any Travel Log w/Map and Dates?

Curious if there’s any travel apps or sites I’m missing that will log your trips, manually or automatically, with the locations on a map along with your dates of visit. I was just hoping to keep track of my trips in a more comprehensive way, and being able to visualize them while also being able to search by timeframe or by...

There’s OpenTracks but idk if that does what you’re looking for.

It’s unencrypted, your ISP / Starbucks wifi can read all the files you send. Use SFTP instead.

What I do is have a separate /synced/media/music folder on both my pc and phone, and use syncthing for that and don’t worry about the default Android music folder.

For playlists I do that on my pc with the music player Strawberry, I can add songs to a playlist and save it as a .m3u file in that same /synced/media/music folder. The playlists still work on my phone since it’s just local paths from the root of my music folder. I would do playlists on my phone as well but I use JetAudio which is pretty buggy and doesn’t let me modify .m3u playlists, although I’m sure some other player would let you create and modify them.

You could try OpenTracks, I used it a few years ago and it was pretty good.

Klaymore ,
@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

It was really cool seeing comments and upvotes change in real time, but I understand it was buggy and terrible for server performance and I’m glad it’s better and more stable now.

I just use Git for my nixos config files.

Who here uses a less popular Linux distribution? What made you choose it?

Hey fellow Linux enthusiasts! I’m curious to know if any of you use a less popular, obscure or exotic Linux distribution. What motivated you to choose that distribution over the more mainstream ones? I’d love to hear about your experiences and any unique features or benefits that drew you to your chosen distribution.

I switched to NixOS almost two years ago, and it’s really nice being able to define my whole system in a single set of config files. If my hard drive dies or I switch computers, I can just reinstall NixOS using my config files and everything will be set up the exact same way. It’s extremely solid and I don’t need to baby my system because if it breaks I can just reinstall everything back to normal.

And I can share parts of the config between devices, so when I change my Neovim or VSCodium configs using Home-Manager it gets synced to my other devices, as well as being saved as part of my NixOS config files.

Distro for experienced Linux user

Hi, I’m looking for a distro for my laptop. My first distro was Pop!_OS, then I switched to Fedora, then Arch for a year and 2 months ago I switched to Fedora Silverblue, because I wanted to try immutable distro that relies on containers and flatpaks to be usefull. Silverblue is great but not so much for me, its not flexible...

@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

You want immutable distros but Silverblue wasn’t flexible enough? Why not try NixOS? It’s really nice.

I’ve been using it for two years and I love being able to make changes to my config and having those changes apply to all my computers. It’s also basically unbreakable, if my computer explodes I can just reinstall NixOS with my config files and it will instantly be set up exactly how I want it.

I normally transcode into DNxHD or DNxHR, I don’t think normal h264 works, but davinci runs so much smoother with DNxHD anyways.

@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

For super resolution you can use gamescope. Smart Memory Access should be called resizable BAR in your bios options.

Klaymore ,
@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

Idk if they mean Virtual Super Resolution, which makes a 1080p monitor act like a 4k monitor, instead of Radeon Super Resolution which is the FSR upscaler for upscaling lower res games.

Bonus action shove is so good, it lets you try shoving people off of edges or into environmental hazards instead of just whacking turn after turn. Also great for spellcasters and ranged attackers, but you need to roll for it so it’s not too overpowered. Bonus action potion drinking is also really nice.

Maybe it only says that if the deleted comment has replies?

I had a dream about windows and have decided to setup Linux on my laptop. What distro should I use?

I used Ubuntu once a few years ago but had compatability issues so I went back to windows. Not a great programmer but I’d like to learn. I’m not looking to do much gaming beyond DOOM2 and factorio. Mostly looking for privacy and a way to get back into programming (I have this pipe dream of learning Assembly). I’m not to...

Klaymore ,
@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

I love NixOS but it can be quite difficult to learn, so learning both linux and nixos at once would be pretty difficult. It’d probably be easier for them to use some normal distro while they figure out how linux works and then switch to NixOS later.

Klaymore ,
@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’ve been using Lapce for a bit and it’s pretty cool, like VSCode but written in Rust. It’s actually so much faster, like you press a key and there’s instantly autocomplete suggestions and error warnings, so it feels a lot more responsive than VSCode. It also opens faster. There’s still a couple weird things and missing functionality though because it’s early in development so I’ll probably go back to VSCode for now.

NixOS all day: unimaginably stable, fun to mess around with, shared configs (including dotfiles) on every device, I really like it.

Klaymore ,
@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

Can you change the Do-Not-Disturb settings to what you want? Otherwise you could look at something like Automation.

Klaymore ,
@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

I just keep all my actual stuff in a separate /stuff partition, so my home folder is only config files. Then I use NixOS home-manager and Impermanence to manage the dotfiles.

How hard is it to build an open source alternative to Duolinguo?

Speaking as a total ignorant from a coding perspective. But I guess that wouldn’t be the hard part, considering that most of Duolinguo is just boxes and text inputs. How difficult it is to create a database of competent linguists with an efficient training who can progressively enhance your understanding of languages?

I used the Sweet-KDE color scheme for years on KDE Plasma, but recently I’ve been converting everything to Catppuccin Macchiato. Default icons and cursors.

Battle For Wesnoth is on android, the controls are kinda wonky but it’s not bad.

What open source programs do you recommend for Windows? (Windows exclusive or not)

I am and all my life have been a Linux user, I have nothing against Windows or MacOS, I just like Linux, and lately I have been experimenting with Windows in a virtual machine and I don’t really know much open source software there apart from the one that is cross-platform like Firefox or Joplin....

Klaymore ,
@Klaymore@sh.itjust.works avatar

FileLight from KDE also works on Windows

I use OpenScan and it works pretty well. You can also check out alternativeto.net

What I read a while ago was that it had too high latency and/or not enough speed to run video streaming for Peertube. It seems like there’s been some work done on getting Nix(OS) working over IPFS, and they asked about it on their latest community survey, but idk how much they’re focusing on it.

AnySoftKeyboard has beta releases once a week, although idk how well they work. I’ve been using the stable version for years and I like it (although the autocorrect can be a bit silly sometimes).

UnexpectedKeyboard is the coolest and lets you easily type (what feels like) every single UTF-8 character imaginable lol. The typing feeling isn’t as nice and I don’t think there’s any autocorrect though so I don’t use it.

Sounds like Muzicbrains Picard should work, it scans the actual sound data and matches it with that song’s metadata. For manual adjustments I use kid3qt.

I've been using Pipewire on NixOS for over a year and it's worked great. Idk if NixOS would be good for you though cause it's pretty hard to learn, but it is really solid.

Syncthing, which syncs my files between my phone and computer. I can rip a music CD on my computer and it’s instantly sent to my phone so I can listen to it on the bus or wherever.
