Gotta resoect the tty. Consistently consitent

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I'm working on a some materials for a class wherein I'll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we're including a section we're calling "foot guns". Basically it's ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

IsoSpandy ,

I have a story that most of here might have faced. I ran dd on my external drive instead of my usb stick to create an iso. 1.8TB of data poof.

IsoSpandy ,

Sorry for hijacking this beautiful conversation you talented gentlemen are having, but can help me out?

I wanted to learn electronic music creation. I learnt very briefly how fl studio works, and then got busy due to my workload. Now I want to give it a go again. I heard llms is good for Linux, but I don't understand how to get various instrument samples like fl studio. How do I set it all up? Can you point me to any good resources. I am also not committed to lmms and am open to suggestions.

IsoSpandy ,

Thank you kind sir. I meant the LMMS DAW. Can you recommend me a good DAW to start?

Offflix - Series manager for your local downloads ( user-images.githubusercontent.com )

I created this project some years back and the project just reached v1.1.0. I know most people have jellyfin servers and all set up, but if you have just a local folder of all your series saved up, you can use this to remember what you were watching....

IsoSpandy OP ,

I didn't find anything and hence I made it.

IsoSpandy OP ,

Thank you so much

IsoSpandy OP ,

Do you know how to code? If so I would love on adding network share features. But I don't have a server and all setup to test it.

IsoSpandy OP ,

Ohhh. No worries. Thanks for the feedback. If I ever acquire the hardware to test I will add the features

IsoSpandy OP ,

I completed all of what has been released till now. I watched season 1 and then experienced the super long hiatus. I never expected s2 to come out.

IsoSpandy OP ,

You like mpv? I like mpv. And guess what offflix uses mpv

IsoSpandy OP ,

Yes... Though I haven't used kodi. I thought of including movies too... But I couldn't think of a place to reliably scrape tags and details about movies.

IsoSpandy OP ,

After the movie there is an entire season. And a season 3 is coming soon. I suggest you re-watch from the start. Wouldn't want to miss out on little kids suffering /s. But honestly it is a very beautiful anime.

IsoSpandy OP ,

I am building this mainly for my personal use. Plus most of dedicated software tries to pander to a large audience incuring bloat. Hence I am not adding networking features now. But I really love my software and if I set up over the network media servers I will update this to that. It's ultimately my code and as you can see by the lack of other people contributing and the software not being that massively popular I don't think anybody will mind.

IsoSpandy OP ,

Please try it out and leave feedback if you wish. I am happy if it helps even one more person than me.

IsoSpandy OP ,

The software inherently tracks the series for you. The data is saved in your .config/offflix folder

IsoSpandy OP ,

Thank you so much. Feel free to leave any comments you might have

IsoSpandy OP ,

If you installed it via

cargo insall offlix

Then t should be available as a cli app. Also the app should be located in .cargo/bin in your MSYS2 home

IsoSpandy OP ,

Just type cargo install offflix. Then you will get it.

IsoSpandy OP , (edited )

Seems like you need openssl for some dependancy. What distro are you using. You can install openssl development libraries and check again.

I just saw you said ubuntu

You need to run

sudo apt install libssl-dev

The run

cargo install offflix
IsoSpandy OP ,

You need a c compiler. Install gcc or clang

sudo apt install gcc
sudo apt install clang
IsoSpandy OP ,

Did you install cargo using rustup? Or did you use the system package manager. Using rustup is the preferred method.

PS I don't have my dev machine with me a this moment. But as I can see many people have so many installation issues, I will try to create a flatpak for the application. I will post soon

IsoSpandy OP ,

Uninstall the system package manager... Then install with rustup.

IsoSpandy OP ,

I see... Okay then.

IsoSpandy ,

I am looking at these gaggle of posts and all of lemmy is flooded with this and then think that there is an entire Spyware OS on the other side... Which who knows what code it runs and people are chill about it. I am so thankful for this community.

IsoSpandy ,

I am a relatively new Linux user, 3 years (almost 2 years dual booted with Windows and now only Linux) and I started using Wayland after approx 2.5 years ago. I used it on my ideapad gaming with 3050etx and Intel igpu and prior to that I used some hp laptop... With gtx 980mx. I used manjaro then arch and then fedora for the last yeae mostly and I haven't encountered any issues with Wayland whatsoever

IsoSpandy ,

You were able to take a nice unixporn worthy screenshot. That is all you need to learn.

Jokes aside I wish you a very good luck

IsoSpandy ,

I know you have been getting a lot of suggestions but have you tried Fedora or any of the rpm based distros?

Basically all Linux distros can trace everything back to three major ones: Debian, Arch and RHEL. (Also slack ware is a thing and there are many non major one). Since you tried Debian and arch families without success, I suggest you give the RHEL family a go. In my experience RHEL based distros have the best hardware compatibility.

I finally nuked windows

I have been daily driving a dual booted laptop for the past two years. After a year of distro hopping I settled with fedora + kde and never looked back. I really liked the auto nvidia driver config and it made everything so pleasant to work. Since the last 8 or 9 months I decided to do gaming using bottles and proton ge. I...

IsoSpandy OP ,

Exactly. Plus I was super creeped out by the news that apparently Microsoft tries to decrypt files I have stored encrypted on my one drive and by default sets up my home directory to be on one drive. What the fuck

IsoSpandy OP ,

I actually set up Linux on my family machine 1 year ago and they don't even notice since all they need is a browser and vlc. So they have been daily driving Linux longer than me :)

IsoSpandy OP ,

It's like a brick off my chest

IsoSpandy OP ,

One of us!!!

IsoSpandy OP ,

Thanks. I was already part of the club. Now just I burnt the access card to the other club

IsoSpandy OP ,

I genuinely do. I can't even imagine why anybody would use software whose source code isn't visible. Not cool.

IsoSpandy OP ,

The main reason I used fedora was because of hassle free nvidia (as muchjh as they can do until nvidia open sources everything and not just the kernel modules).

IsoSpandy OP ,

Thank you. Drinks on me!!!

IsoSpandy OP ,

I actually did everything on Ext4 and had a separate home partition which was only 30gigs. So that was the main gripe in the previous install I had I thought to rectify it.

Alas I didn't use btrfs this time also and did Ext4. Maybe I should have enabled snapshots. Who knows. I may just be an adventurous dude.

IsoSpandy OP ,

Fuck Microsoft.

IsoSpandy OP ,

Glad to. Sharing the holy word my friends.

IsoSpandy OP ,

Basically the windows partition was taking up around 250 gb. And wasn't even booting into it. Sure I could access it from Linux, but it was literally useless.

IsoSpandy OP ,

It wasn't the fact that I got updates that bothered me. It's the fact that this update will take up more space on my disk and not replace previously occupied 8 gb that irked me. Some how, the space occupied by windows jut keeps on increasing.

IsoSpandy OP ,

I also don't bother with Flats and snaps. Too much hassle. I like the fact that Linux uses system wide linkable so files.

IsoSpandy OP ,

We all just bask in the brilliance of a glorious eggroll.

IsoSpandy OP ,

I am sorry if my post made you feel bored. But please don't unsubscribe. What kind of post do you want to see on this platform? I am sure people can reach a common ground my mutual discussion.
