What are the most private social media platforms?

I've been feeling uneasy about the privacy implications of using Lemmy and similar platforms. The ability for anyone to view your entire posting history feels to me like publicly sharing my browser history. In contrast, most other social media platforms allow you to limit your feed visibility to just friends or followers....

Check out Wiremin
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wiremin.im

It's pretty private but when I uninstalled the community was getting sparse and notifications were slow. Might be better or worse these days.

I use both Mac and Pop!_OS (Gnome) and I like and dislike both. MacOS has a great qulcklook that I miss in Gnome. Sushi almost corrected that oversight but it hasn't worked right for me in a couple of years now. I also like Mac's useful icon shortcut in the window title bar.

Gnome's extension system is a clusterfuck, but at least I can decide how windows function, unlike Mac.

Delusion6903 ,

I'm talking about previewing PDFs, mp4s, and photos in the finder by selecting the file and hitting the spacebar.

And Linux really needs an app like Preview too.

Delusion6903 ,

But you can follow Lemmy accounts from Mastodon

Delusion6903 ,

It would be perfect except that the fingerprint protection includes forcing the screen refresh rate to the lowest common denominator. Scrolling is unbearable.

They need to report whatever number they want while always using the highest rate instead.

Delusion6903 ,

I know it's intended, but I find it unusable. Report what you want, but disconnect from the actual refresh rate. Best of both worlds.

Delusion6903 , (edited )

And that is exactly why I find it unusable. I have a 120 Hz phone slowed down to a hideous 60 Hz. This is why use Firefox instead of mull.

Delusion6903 ,

Does Firefox standard fingerprint resistance include the refresh rate? Because I use Firefox over mull on Android because of the drastic difference when scrolling.

Delusion6903 ,

Ok, that actually sounds encouraging to me. Honestly, on Android Firefox I don't see the option for resist fingerprinting. I am using Strict Enhanced Tracking protection but that isn't affecting refresh. What am I missing?

Delusion6903 ,

Ok, I've now had time to check this out. Android Firefox is set to strict Enhanced Tracking Protection which says offers fingerprint protection. If that is capping my refresh rate, then I can't see it. Scrolling is smooth.

In contrast, Mull is distractingly flashy when scrolling. There is absolutely something different going on here.

Delusion6903 ,

I suppose that's why you can accept the message or not. I believe they can be reused.

Delusion6903 ,

I have given names to people on the Internet and changed names after our conversation was finished. I think that is much better than giving someone a phone number and much easier to change.

Delusion6903 ,

I don't disagree with you either. But I think that when people give their phone number to a business they are often unaware of all of the nefarious ways it will be used, whether by ignorance or deception.

My point is just that replaceable usernames are perfect for random people you meet IRL or on the Internet because it's minimal trouble to disconnect permanently when the time comes.

Delusion6903 ,

Those are the particular interactions for which I have used usernames. People I know have me in contacts. Also, iirc, if I change usernames in the middle of a conversation that conversation is able to continue until I delete it. Plenty of time to pass on a new name if desired.

Delusion6903 ,

Signal has read receipts, reactions and typing indicators. That's 90% of what any messenger needs. It also let's you schedule texts. I do wish it would do reminders and pinch to resize text though.

Delusion6903 ,

The idea is to show normies on Threads that it's better over here without so the ads and shit. Let Meta introduce them to the fediverse.

Delusion6903 ,

Today.

Delusion6903 ,

And if they force a particular DNS they're is a reason for that and I don't use that Wi-Fi

Delusion6903 ,

Those that are on Threads are likely not even aware of the rest of the fediverse. I think that when they interact with us they will be. And when Meta decides it's time to start ads some people will think it's better over here. Also, some people won't like Threads using an algorithm on their feed.

Delusion6903 ,

Mull would be perfect except for the annoyingly slow refresh rate enabled by the fingerprint resistance. It needs to just report a low refresh rate while actually using a higher one.

Delusion6903 ,

Yeah, they need to fix that

Delusion6903 ,

I'll use mull again when I can scroll without the screen looking like a strobe light

Delusion6903 ,

I use Librewolf on my laptop for most browsing, but I keep Google Chrome open just for Gmail, calendar, and drive. I know what you mean about losing the damn cookies making you suddenly have to get a text to authenticate again and that sucks.

When I come across those sites I usually just pull them up in Chrome instead since I keep it open anyway. They are typically not tracking sites anyway and I'm using an adblocking DNS.

Delusion6903 ,

I'm using Librewolf. The problem is that when cookies are deleted some sites will want to text you to "authenticate" your browser again. Your name and password alone are not enough.

It gets old doing this repeatedly. And it pisses me off that they act like they are being so secure by doing this yet they use a text instead of an authenticator app.

Delusion6903 ,

Covermytracks makes never Brave look better than, say Librewolf, because Brave randomizes fingerprinting info while other browsers try to thwart fingerprinting by all looking the same.

Delusion6903 ,

It just might. But my problem might still be that I have my entire history and cookies are deleted as they age past 28 days so anything that I only rarely return to is lost. I might have to check into exceptions.

Delusion6903 ,

You're probably right. I'd rather do it that way too.

Delusion6903 ,

My family is all on iMessage. I told them if they didn't install Signal I wouldn't reply to their texts.

At first, whenever they texted I would just reply with something that looked automated like "This user is no longer available via text message. Please install Signal if you wish to communicate."

Delusion6903 ,

Does it handle the battery usage better? I had to remove Element because it was killing my battery.

Delusion6903 ,

I agree with you on this much of the time. Especially on sites today that have ads. The fediverse doesn't have that problem.

But the mobile web interface isn't that great yet for Lemmy. Pixelfed's web interface is so good I debate whether or not to use an app but Lemmy isn't there yet.

Delusion6903 ,

I use Summit for now. I went through quite a few others but this one is a keeper.

Delusion6903 ,

The gay marriage thing is not a good look now, but it's worth noting that he's not trying to abolish it today.

And the referral link things is also old and it was walked back after it was discovered.

Choose your tools based on your needs because everyone will have some politics you don't like.

Delusion6903 ,

As far as I know, you are correct. My main browser is Librewolf and search engine is DDG. But I still use Brave when I rarely need a chromium browser or alternate search engine and he gains nothing from that.

Delusion6903 ,

Too bad people on mastodon don’t have the ability to block an instance they find objectionable for themselves-- oh wait.

Not sure about Lemmy, but we can do this on mastodon. I don’t need someone else deciding for me.

Tldr? Couldn’t disagree more

Delusion6903 ,

Anyone else having the flatpak app crash when you click on a notification?

Twitter traffic is 'tanking' as Meta's Threads hits 100 million users ( www.cnbc.com )

Meta’s new text-based social app Threads has quickly gained 100 million users since launching last week, which appears to be negatively impacting traffic on Twitter. According to web analytics, Twitter traffic declined 5-11% over the first two days Threads was available compared to the previous week. Threads was able to grow...

Delusion6903 ,

what is this private vs public profile? I don’t know the difference.

YSK: Signal is a great secure private messenger app comparable to others on the market. ( restoreprivacy.com )

“When you use Signal, your data is stored in encrypted form on your devices. The only information that is stored on the Signal servers for each account is the phone number you registered with, the date and time you joined the service, and the date you last logged on.”...

Delusion6903 ,

I gave up on Element. It was using more battery than any other app and I didn’t know anyone else using it. Now I’m just using Session or Telegram for anonymous messaging. Yeah, I know Telegram is not ideal.
