There was just a similar post here. You may find interesting clues there as well.

I've been watching on the framework machines for my next one. It looks like fwupd support them for BIOS updates. Framework owners will know more for sure.

I use the open source KISS launcher for years now. Your data never leaves your device, and you can expect to save battery life
and speed up your device compared to complex and bloated launchers. KISS is just 250 KB and never connects to the Internet.

The best thing is that - behind a simplistic configuration menu - you can configure it from an ultra minimalist black screen with one text box to call when you need to launch an app, search for a contact, search on internet... to a full app drawer organized however you want (alphabetical order, your own defined categories...). It's just insane and unfortunately so much overlooked.

To investigate the issue you may want to use a bootable drive and chroot into your system. This will allow you to see any error messages using the journactl command. Once you know what's going on exactly you'll be able to fix it or get a better assistance from people here or on the Arch forum.
I know someone who encountered the exact same login behavior after this update. It appeared that some packages were broken and he had to reinstall them.

wwwgem ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

I'll put the link to the wiki here again ;)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Chroot

"Run arch-chroot with the new root directory as first argument:

# arch-chroot /path/to/new/root

You can now do most of the operations available from your existing installation. Some tasks which needs D-Bus will not work as noted in #Usage"

Glad you're back on tracks! Looks like this update messed up /bin for some people. I love when OPs like you take time to close their first post with the resolution. Thank you.
If you have time to quickly summarize the details of the fix that may benefit others as well.

I second that. Always have a bootable disk ready (or even better a bootable image on your machine) so you can recover from any issues in a snap. Over the course of 20 years using Linux I can only remember two blackscreens. Unlike other OS, these situations don't happen randomly but mostly when the user mess up with the system (like in your case) and that's great opportunities to learn a lot about your system because that's when you really need to understand how it works.

The general idea is that a desktop environment provides you with common graphical user interface elements such as icons, toolbars, wallpaper, and desktop widgets. In other terms it's purely an aesthetic question. You can also decide which of these features will be useful to you and install the appropriate package(s) if you don't want to grab the bundle that comes with any DE.

As far of timing is concerned, you can always experiment and install what you need as you go. The only downside to wait will depend on how good your distro is in managing packages dependencies.

Personaly, my Linux journey made me realize that the features offer by a DE were actually negatively impacting my productivity and a windows manager (a tiling one for me) was all I needed. But this decision - like a lot of others - comes down to personal tastes. Note that not using a DE doesn't mean relying on the terminal only.

A somehow old (2021) but interesting article about why the community is moving from wpa-supplicant to iwd: https://www.linux-magazine.com/Issues/2021/243/iNet-Wireless-Daemon

Here is an excerpt of interest:
"The description of the iwd project on www.kernel.org highlights simplicity as an important factor behind iwd's recent rise: "The core goal of the project is to optimize resource utilization: storage, runtime memory, and link-time costs. This is accomplished by not depending on any external libraries and utilizing features provided by the Linux Kernel to the maximum extent possible. The result is a self-contained environment that only depends on the Linux Kernel and the runtime C library.""

ArchLinux and Ubuntu respectively tested iwd on July 2020 and in Ubuntu 20.10.

You'll soon join the dark side of minimalism where neither tabs nor stacks are an option. That's where tiling WM push you eventually ;)
I use librewolf (fork of Firefox) with no bars whatsoever so I can benefit of the entire screen space to show me what matters:
the content. I've coupled it with the tridactyl extension for a lot of reasons, one being that it can show me the list of tabs with a keybinding (simply pressing "T" in my case).

wwwgem ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Tiling WM are more than screen splitters. It's difficult to apprehend without trying it. A friend of mine had the same reasoning before actually trying one. Now he couldn't go back. Although, like everything else, tiling WM are not for everyone and that's why there're other options :)

@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

I've been through awesomewm, i3, and dwm. Now I'm using bspwm. Each one has its own specificities and is more or less easy to familiarized with.

"Traditionally, the /opt directory is used for installing/storing the files of third-party applications that are not available from the distribution’s repository.

The normal practice is to keep the software code in opt and then link the binary file in the /bin directory so that all the users can run it."

Please recommend me some blogs about Linux or FOSS or similar that you follow through RSS.

Hi. I have a category Little Tech Blogs in my rss reader where I put those cool niche blogs mostly about Linux, FOSS, programming, etc... Many of them I found by articles linked in this community, so I was wondering if you guys know about more blogs like that. By little I mean it's run by one person or a small group of people,...

Asking for a Linux (or non-Windows) laptop during a job interview?

I'm interviewing for a software dev job currently (it's in the initial stages). If things work out, I'd absolutely prefer a work laptop with Linux installed (I personally use PopOS but any distro will do), a Mac will be second choice, but I absolutely cannot tolerate Windows, I abhor it, I hate it... (If all computers left on...

wwwgem ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

If only asking the same thing for non-computer jobs would be accepted. I always have to use my personal laptop.

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Great to hear! Going with AMD is something I've tried to do for a long time but I was not lucky with availability, I'll definitely take the opportunity to do so with the next laptop!

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Thanks. TBH Purism is currently at the bottom (out) of my list based on what I've read but I've put it here to collect any feedback that would change my mind.
A friend of mine has a not that good experience with Tuxedo hardware. But this is a sample 1 and I've read a lot of good stuff about them as well so...

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

That's interesting... I was not aware of that. Another more element to add to my future decision ^^

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Any more details? ;)

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

I've been disappointed by them and as you can tell I'm not the kind of person to be married with a brand :D I may go back to them one day if there's really one machine I want. Until then I'll stay away from them. Also I really would like to support a company with a better philosophy (from my POV).

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Right. I was more asking if the OP had any complaints, even minor. Or anything that makes framework standing out except the obvious unique aspects of repairability, extensibility, customization. I'm already clearly sold on that :D

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

So far this is really what makes me leaning toward Framework. But you know, when something seems too good to be true... If Framework is as perfect as it seems to be I can't wait for the need of a new laptop :D

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Novacustom... Never heard of it. The almost insignificant disadvantage I can see so far for Framework is that they don't use open-source boot.
Everyone so far stand behind Framework. How would you sell me on System76 or Novacustom?

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Thanks for a nice feedback. One more vote for Framework ;)
I don't use a DE, so this would not make me go with them. Also, I'll use Arch anyway, not PopOS.

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

That would be another terrible story about a great idea turning into BS for profit only. Fingers crossed that it won't happen.

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Thanks for the feedback.

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Can you expand on that?

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes, using coreboot would just have been nice to support open-source from all aspects.

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Very nice to read this feedback. I'm very sold to Framework after all the great things posted here. An impeccable customer support like the one you describe means a lot about a company.

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Thanks very much for this important feedback. Framework is definitely taking the lead in responses to this post.

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Wow that's quite impressive. Serious customer service definitely.

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

I'm not yet in need for a laptop but I'll definitely check the outlet. With the replacement parts it can also be another advantage where you may be able to buy a laptop and replace what you need still for a good price.

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Any more details to share?

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

I agree. Have you ever owned one?

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Framework also has an outlet, just in case you want to take a look ;)

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Thanks for the great details!

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Thanks for sharing this feedback. One more point for Framework :)

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Thank you for taking time to share this detailed feedback. Very useful!

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Wonderful to hear! Thanks for bringing one more vote to Framework :)

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Looks like Framework receives a ton of support. System76 has been surprisingly almost not mentioned and not always in the best terms.
Thanks for your feedback!

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Thanks. That does not not really address my question but I certainly share your view as to not be married to a brand. My personal history and this post question are actually going that route.

wwwgem OP , (edited )
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Influence is a curse in today's world. I've made this final selection of brands based on personal choice and for reasons exposed in this post. But it's all personal so you may disagree with some/all candidates and that's perfectly fine. I've posted here to actually collect as much opinions as possible so thanks for sharing yours.

Companies always find a way to justify for higher price to sell you not that good hardware or to overprice their stuff for non sense reasons. As anyone else (except fan boys of any given brand) I'm running away from that. In my personal views, companies on this list have reasonable offers considering their history, clients pool, philosophy...

Framework is maybe the best deal here because it has good price and all parts of their machines are replaceable. And again, prices for the parts are fair. So in the long run, users may be winners if the company doesn't crash. If it does then it won't be worth than having bought from another company. With all the options to build the laptop you want for your needs it really make me feel like customizing my Linux system but from a hardware standpoint. It's a big plus for me to pay only for what I want/need and with them you can go even further by physically positioning your ports on the fly. That's an unseen degree of freedom and it has real world applications.

wwwgem OP ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

Don't know if you plan to use another Arch-based distro on this laptop in the future but I came across this page which has some tips to adjust the Framework 13 including one that may be related to what you mention. They recommend to use 1,5 scaling factor. More details can be found here.

wwwgem OP , (edited )
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

I agree it's clearly a win in the long run. Also their prices are not cheap but fair, even though you'd pay ~$100 less than an XPS for the exact same specs (but a higher res display and webcam with Framework).

looking for lightweight launchers but...

Hi guys, I'm a blackberry keyone user and I'm pretty much used to. Due it have only 3 gigs of ram I began to use Mini Desktop launcher, that goes only to 40 mb of consumption. My doubt is, there's another lightweight launcher outside the non distraction ones? (Olaunche, ulauncher, mlauncher...)

wwwgem ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

It's not user friendly at first and that's certainly why it doesn't get the love it deserved. But once you figure it out, you can build the launcher you want and never have to go back to the config anymore.

wwwgem ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

The web browser app should be defined at the system level by defining your default apps in Android. Search engines can be defined in the "search settings" of KISS.

wwwgem ,
@wwwgem@lemmy.ml avatar

I have haptic feedback disabled globally. I don't know if there's an option in KISS for that.
