Why every TOTP app default uses SHA-1 hash encryption?

I use Aegis as my 2fa. Today on new token creation I observed that there's hash function set to SHA-1, later checked all my tokens and the result is same type of encryption used for all. So I have edited all my tokens to SHA-256 as a result my totp doesn't authenticate. Do I have to rescan my tokens for updating to SHA-256 or...

@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

You should be using bcrypt or something similiarly designed to hash passwords, since they are much safer than sha256/512. Sha is not designed for hashing passwords and therefore a fast algorithm which you shouldn't use for passwords

what does depmod -a do?

BentiGorlich OP ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

I definitely don't want to deal with that. Last time that happened I had to do a clean install which is just pain imo XD

BentiGorlich OP ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Are you using KDE or Gnome?

BentiGorlich OP ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

That doesn't sound promising, though I am using Gnome, so at least my DE is not getting the biggest upgrade :)

@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

nvidia RTX 2070 super. But that was from 38 to 39. I am not on 40 yet

very nice

BentiGorlich OP ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Nice though. Sounds like I can do the upgrade 😁

BentiGorlich OP ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

I decided to upgrade, and so far everything is working fine. I had some hiccups after the installation, but a reboot fixed all of them. Thanks for your input :)

[Fixed] Mouse Cursor jumps around ( gehirneimer.de )

Hello everyone, I have a weird problem with my mouse: when I switch the window focus, e.g. by alt tabbing to another window, or by closing a window, and the newly focused window is on my other monitor my mouse will jump to that monitor without me doing anything....

BentiGorlich OP ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

My Gnome is in German and I do not know which point is meant by "Desktop":

BentiGorlich OP ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Omg you're right, I am using the Forge extension and that had a setting for it, thank you :)

BentiGorlich OP ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

i installes forge (gnome tiling manager) and that had an option for it

Zulip is pretty nice and I think it resembled discord the most out of the software I know

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

I like Nextcloud very much but this release (and the one before it) are really enterprise focused for which I don't have a use case...

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Nope, that is mbin :)

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Did you actually try mbin? Because we fixed a huge number of federation issues kbin had/has. Sure a bunch still need to be worked on, but we do our best and improve it with every release

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

well I am an active mbin contributor and cannot confirm any of that. He never tried to contribute to lemmy as far as I know and trying to contribute to kbin is just a big disappointment (I've been there as well). As for the name, personally I don't care. It is just how it is and nowhere does it say "this is melroys bin" or something like that...

If you don't want to get involved that is fine, but the rumors around him are basically all false...

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Only interstellar afaik

  • I've modified my comment in #248 because it needs investigating and if it is not working than it needs to be fixed/added
  • #694 is mostly done

Both of which are only relevant for magazines/communities hosted on mbin instances. But yes we still do lack moderation features. I am working on it (as you can see the issue and PR are authored by me), but there is just still a lot to do in various different regions

BentiGorlich ,

android

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

On both you have to search for a magazine handle (magazine@instance.tld) if the magazine is not yet on the server. And not the magazine search but the regular search. It can of course be blocked by the instance, but most likely just nobody searched for it before.
Most mbin instances are very small and even fedia only has like 4000 total users... Therefore not that many magazines/communities have been pulled in, yet...

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Yeah our user documentarion could need some inprovements. Though I doubt a lot of users would actually look at it....

The best way to link communuties is with the !community which works on lemmy and Mbin, but not on kbin (I think)

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Well that sucks...
that vlad dude is ehm... weird. I am happy with the service I am getting from Kagi, but such behaviour is not acceptable...

what will be my next server operating system (Fedora Server, Fedora CoreOS, NixOS), your experience and opinion

I want to reset my server soon and I'm toying with the idea of using a different operating system. I am currently using Ubuntu Server LTS. However, I have been toying with the idea of using Fedora Server (I use Fedora on my laptop and made good experiences with it) or even Fedora CoreOS. I also recently installed NixOS on my...

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

I use Organic Maps to find places by name and OSMand to find places by address. Both can only the do one of the two things good, but it is doable.

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

OSM is not that user friendly as Google Maps for sure, but if you really want you really can replace GMaps. It probably heavily depends on your country and if the OSM community is active there, but for example here in Germany the mapping information is basically on par with GMaps

I Don't have WhatsApp anymore. Though I just deleted my WhatsApp account and said that I am no longer reachable via that crap. If you want to contact me use Signal. Most of my friends just installed Signal (a few took some time), but if you don't do it that way you will never get away from WhatsApp just because of the network effect...
And yes, you will miss out on some groups

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

I've had Threema for a while even before that, because my family group migrated there. Though I do not have a lot of contacts on there :D

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

You have to use an app for that. OSM is mostly a big database with an API access to it. There are a lot of them out there with a lot of different focusses. For navigating with a car OSMand is pretty good. They are on fdroid.

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Gotta look at that. Live traffic info is one of those things, that OSM lacks...

I am rocking a Fairphone 4 with iodéOS and I am very happy with it. Though I am definitely not phone power user...

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

FDroid is a native app store, aurora is preinsralled as well as microG. I don't use any google apps and have none installed. Afaik there is no option to have GAPPS with iodéOS.
They do sell the fairphone with the OS preinsralled which is very nice and iodé is from france which is a plus in my book as well 😁

@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

I really dig the design. I gotta test it out 😊

Fedora 38, one year ago. I am on 39 now and had to do a reinstall. It has its problems, a lot of problems actually, but is still miles better than windows in my opinion

BentiGorlich ,

Already defederated all servers I run from threads. It's just another reason why that was a good decision...

BentiGorlich ,

Honestly I use docker because by now I know docker and basically everything has support for it...

BentiGorlich OP ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

I've been half way happy with it. I find the backup folders annoying and it would be awesome if you had the option to containerize tab groups

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

What about nextcloud? With the memories app you have something like google photos with locally running face recognition and a timeline, etc etc. I really like it

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

open signups mean you just register via email and password (on mastodon you still have to verify your mail) and you're good to go. On a lot of platforms you have an "approval" mode were admins have to approve each account that wants to register

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

I think its great. Its for people who simply don't want to share their phone number with other people which is a huge privacy concern, as you can find out a lot about a person by looking up info connected to their phone number.

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

I love it. Personally I don't think it is too expensive, though I am probably a power user of search engines, as I need it a lot while programming all sorts of stuff... So maybe it is just me saying its worth the money, because I use it a lot

BentiGorlich ,
@BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de avatar

Running a search engine is just a lot more expensive than running a VPN and email service. The amount of data and processing power needed to have a useful search index is just so much higher
