It genuinely is. I really like the combination with an immutable OS like OpenSUSE Aeon because you have a super stable base that you can add whatever packages you need to via distrobox.

Notably, GNOME is usually packaged a few months after openSUSE and Fedora ship it.

In this case, it’s actually a plus IMO. Giving Gnome extension devs a month or so to ensure that any compatibility issues are fixed is ideal.

Gnome without extensions?? I could never.

How can I convert my music?

I have a fairly large music collection, which is 9.9 GB in size. It’s mainly made up of MP3 files, with some OGG Vorbis files and a handful of WAV and WMA files. I would like to convert the entire library to AAC (or a better format, if there is one) in order to reduce the size of my collection by a considerable amount....

Converting from one lossy codec another isn’t generally recommended, plus you aren’t likely to save that much disk space by converting to AAC.

10 GB is actually pretty small for a local music collection, quite honestly. If I were you, I would try to expand your storage capacity instead of wasting time, and potentially audio quality, by transcoding.

If I were you, I would stick to streaming in that case.

However, if you’re dead set on storing files locally and there’s no other option but to transcode, then use 128kbps Opus instead of AAC - assuming that iPhones support it (I haven’t checked). It’s a lot more efficient.

A good converter program to use is fre:ac but don’t ask me for an iOS only app because I’m not an Apple guy at all.

Both of those can be remedied by simply enabling an extension and hot corners respectively.

Any computer that can run windows 11 can run any Linux DE without issue - you don’t necessarily need a lightweight distro.

For that type of machine, I’d probably go with a reasonably up-to-date distro with either KDE Plasma or Gnome.

Nobara might actually be a good choice - it’s Fedora but tweaked for gaming and media creation.

Debian Sid is even more unstable than Arch, though. I’d never recommend it for anyone who doesn’t want to be routinely maintaining their system.

The GSConnect extension enables the same functionality on Gnome, btw.

Why would I use KDE when Gnome is better? 😉

It’s a rolling community distro that’s also beginner-friendly. For instance, its package manager uses plain English terms instead of the unintuitive alphabet soup that Arch-based distros employ.

It also is the flagship distro for the Budgie DE.

I’ve tried it out a few times in a VM and there’s a lot to like about it, but IMO the downsides are package availability (especially when compared to the AUR) and the dev team’s rocky past. I’ll be keeping an eye on it, though.

Doesn’t the Mint software center prompt for an admin authentication if you install a .deb package?

If so, an immutable OS like Silverblue would be technically more simple, seeing as flatpak installation doesn’t require sudo.

aleph ,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Fedora is a bit more complicated to install and configure, but once that’s done it’s not a difficult distro to use. And Silverblue makes it even easier to maintain than Mint as it’s immutable.

Solus interests me, but it was pretty much dead for a good while until very recently. I still think it’s best to wait another 6-12 months to ensure that they succeed in regularly keeping everything updated before recommending it to people.

aleph ,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

That same problem has happened twice with Solus though - Ikey’s abrupt departure being the first.

I hope that this time the structural changes will ensure they sail on a even keel for a good while, but I remain wary.

aleph ,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Definitely not for a Linux beginner, though.

You’re using X11 rather than Wayland, right?
What command are you using for xrandr?

aleph ,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Well the method looks correct, but xrandr doesn’t support full wayland, AFAIK. It’s really meant for X11.

I haven’t looked into this myself, but perhaps there’s a newer tool that can get the job done?

I think the biggest draw for Nix is configuration.nix and being able to centralize your system configuration. I personally find the AUR to be better in terms of software, especially from GitHub.

I agree that people shouldn’t jump blind into Nix without first getting to grips with it though a VM or something, tho. The learning curve is quite steep.

aleph ,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Yeah, if you have the time and the inclination to sit down and learn how Nix operates, then you’ll be fine.

For myself, I realized that I am happier tinkering with it now and again rather than running it as a daily driver OS.

So Ubuntu is garbage because “firefox is a snap lol” but Kubuntu is great for beginners?

Trolling for YouTube views, smh

aleph ,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Same here. It’s a great tool but I’ve never found a real-world situation where I actually need it.

aleph ,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Pretty much every Lemmy app currently in production let’s you do this, tbh.

It’s invariably either by a single press or a long press on the parent comment.

aleph ,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Headsets and headphones are not the same thing and have very different market demographics.

aleph ,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

This is a great base for people to create their own. I much prefer the wider page width to Lemmy's default on desktop.

Personally, though, I find the box outline colors in these themes to be a little loud.

I tweaked the CSS and made it look a bit more understated.

Very nice!
