Yeah, a lot of expectations people have around Linux are about a decade old. I think Linux has really improved a lot in the area of gaming over the last few years even.

And as long as Linux keeps being worth supporting I think we'll see more and more games targeted toward linux.

NocturnalMorning ,

What a dick. I couldn't imagine spending that much time contributing to a project so I could introduce security vulnerabilities.

If this is one individual, and not a nation state, somebody needs to make some friends and pick up some hobbies.

NocturnalMorning ,

Yeah, I got that. I'm saying they need to make some friends and get some hobbies if they aren't being funded by a state.

Warner Bros. is now erasing games as it plans to delist Adult Swim-published titles ( www.polygon.com )

Warner Bros. Discovery is telling developers it plans to start “retiring” games published by its Adult Swim Games label, game makers who worked with the publisher tell Polygon. At least three games are under threat of being removed from Steam and other digital stores, with the fate of other games published by Adult Swim...

NocturnalMorning ,

They don't realize by doing stuff like this they are pushing people back to piracy.

NocturnalMorning , (edited )

You should really probably keep this on the DL. No reason to shut the project down regardless of what Nintendo does, but this needs to be done quietly now since it's gotten a ton of attention.

Edit: Just bcz, fuck you nintendo, I'm never buying your consoles again. You lost any remaining sliver of goodwill you had with this move.

NocturnalMorning ,

I was planning to get a new nvidia graphics card. Now I'm not so sure. This is bad news for everyone.

NocturnalMorning ,

Wow, fuck Nintendo. For well over a decade they didn't give a shit about emulating old games. In fact, it was and is still the only way to play a lot of old games. Now nintendo is trying to use their shit flimsy online emulator as an excuse to claim IP right to 30 year old games they don't give a shit about. Granted this is about the emulator itself, but doesn't matter. Guess I won't be buying the next switch console.

NocturnalMorning ,

Eh, I don't really care. Now that every manufacturer and developer under the sun has decided I don't own the games I buy. I couldn't care less about their games getting pirated. I mean, I don't own the game anyway according to their ToS, I just rent it.

But it's more than that. I can't even find old game isos easily anymore. Nintendo went out of their way to threaten legal action against sites that had been up for over a decade so they could do their shitty online emulator store.

They're going after everyone now. I bought my switch in 2016, won't be buying another one.

With AI looming, is there still space for new coders?

For some background, I originally wanted to break into programming back when I was in college but drifted more into desktop tech support and now systems administration. SysAdmin work is draining me, though, and I want to pick back up programming and see if I can make a career out of it, but industry seems like it could be moving...

NocturnalMorning ,

It you can pair coding with something in engineering with physics, there's a lot less chance of that happening. That said AI taking programming jobs is still a long ways off if it ever gets there even.

A lot of programs you ask chatGPT to write have a lot of nonsense in them, so someone has to manually sift through fake api calls, or just flat out incorrect algorithms. That said it's not a bad starting point if you are a seasoned expert and can sift through all that stuff.

NocturnalMorning ,

So fairly odd parents for grownups, anyone?

NocturnalMorning ,

I don't understand this whole internet of things crap going on, my Bluetooth headphones require a damn app, and now my toothbrush does? This is getting out of hand. Everything doesn't need an internet connection.

NocturnalMorning ,

Of course they are, why would there be a basic expectation of privacy for medical data, it’s only a HiPAA violation to disclose it.

NocturnalMorning ,

Yeah, this is the thing that’s making me want to go back to having a private music library again. I pay for this shit, and they keep removing songs from my play lists.

NocturnalMorning ,

You know hardware doesn’t last forever right? Like, I couldn’t just have kept my ipod for 20 years bcz it wouldn’t even be functional.

NocturnalMorning ,

Do people really get off on feeling superior with this shit?

NocturnalMorning ,

I mean, this meme is used all over lemmy, and it’s usually the same thing, someone comparing why they do something to someone else and the context is usually to feel superior.

NocturnalMorning ,

This is a general comment about the circulation of this meme on lemmy. It’s getting old seeing it constantly.

NocturnalMorning ,

That’s nice

NocturnalMorning ,

Have you tried coming up with sketches instead of asking AI bots to do it for you?

NocturnalMorning ,

Haha, no worries. English is certainly a funny language.

NocturnalMorning ,

Do yourself a favor and watch the video. However funny you think it is, it’s better.

NocturnalMorning ,

Think about how you'd feel if your own country was in a shit situation economically, and wasnt safe anymore, and then someone told you to go the fuck home.. that street goes both ways, and could be a reality.

NocturnalMorning ,

Easy to say knowing your home is a safe place to be. Also really racist and presumptuous to assume that someone wanting better opportunity and safety is by default dangerous and/or always going to be poor.

And extremely ironic to say that from a country that was founded on the idea of coming here for better opportunities.

NocturnalMorning ,

Dude, there were already people here when we showed up. We killed them and gave them diseases and stole their land. How's that for coming here legally? So arrogant.

NocturnalMorning ,

Wouldn’t that just be the crap sandwich corporations should eat. Try to get rid of wages by using AI, and end up paying sentient AI wages anyway.

AI chatbots can infer an alarming amount of info about you from your responses ( arstechnica.com )

Vechev and his team found that the large language models that power advanced chatbots can accurately infer an alarming amount of personal information about users—including their race, location, occupation, and more—from conversations that appear innocuous.

NocturnalMorning ,

I mean, can be used that way, can also be used to predict the stock market, or future climate. Just depends on the intent.

NocturnalMorning ,

There’s nothing wrong with Firefox’s UI. I’ve been using it for years, along side Chrome and whatever else my work makes me use. For home stuff, I use Firefox, and I don’t notice any difference except they don’t incessantly track me.

Chinese programmer ordered to pay 1m yuan for using virtual private network ( www.theguardian.com )

A programmer in northern China has been ordered to pay more than 1 million yuan to the authorities for using a virtual private network (VPN), in what is thought to be the most severe individual financial penalty ever issued for circumventing China’s “great firewall.” The programmer, surnamed Ma, was issued with a penalty...

NocturnalMorning ,

Nah, they’re definitely doing this. I searched for my itch fame page on Google with my username, and it didn’t come up in the search. But sure enough things I could buy came up in the search.

Then I went to duckduckgo and searched the exact same thing and my page was first I. The results, it even had all of my games as search result hits as well.

Google is most definitely showing you search results other than what you searched for.

NocturnalMorning ,

*itch game page

NocturnalMorning ,

Must be a connect thing. I can’t seem to edit my comments from this App.

NocturnalMorning ,

Hmm, maybe I need to update

NocturnalMorning ,

Pretty sure when I search my username plus a specific website I should get back results from that website…

NocturnalMorning ,

K, then why did a different search engine give me correct results while Google gave me advertisements? Nevermind that a different person in this thread is telling you they uses to work advertising for Google, and they so infact change the search results.

I’m sorry, but I cannot help you with finding pirated movies. Piracy is illegal and unethical 😉 ( feddit.it )

Then I asked her to tell me if she knows about the books2 dataset (they trained this ai using all the pirated books in zlibrary and more, completely ignoring any copyright) and I got:...

NocturnalMorning ,

I remember a time when everything on my computer wasn’t trying to sell me something. Of course, my computer also came with incessant pop-ups back in the 90s too, so that wasn’t great. It was just a bunch of chat rooms, talking to strangers on the internet and playing video games.

NocturnalMorning ,

Google also replaces your Google searches with different searches behind the scenes to things they can make money off kf. Found that out the other day, and switched to duckduckgo instead. Google has become a Spyware nightmare.

NocturnalMorning ,

I figured this out when I searched for my gaming web page on itch.io, and it wouldn’t come up. But then I went to duckduckgo and did the search, and every game I’ve made was in the search result. Pretty scummy if you ask me. Needless to say I changed all my browsers to duckduckgo instead of google.

NocturnalMorning ,

Yes, I meant search engine. I also use Firefox as well :)

NocturnalMorning ,

If you’re response to a prank is to pull out a gun and shoot someone, you belong in a psychiatric ward away from people bcz that mentality gets people killed.

NocturnalMorning ,

Sure, but it doesn’t warrant pulling out a gun.

NocturnalMorning ,

So throw a punch, or shove him. You seriously think shooting someone is an acceptable response?

NocturnalMorning ,

Sure, not saying what the prankster did was right. But pulling a gun on him is escalation beyond what a reasonable person would do.

NocturnalMorning ,

Crazy idea, but you could just not bring a gun into a mall…

NocturnalMorning ,

As if I needed another reason not to use Unity.

NocturnalMorning ,

Probably not, they want to sell you their version.
