I paid over $1k about 10 years ago for music software. My computer killed itself, so I made a new one and redownloaded the software...but the company said I'm an imposter. After years of fighting with them, they refused to activate my paid software despite proving my identity and showing proof of purchase. I didn't choose to pirate, the system chose for me

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Some day surely Windows and Mac will get something similar to SearXNG, then you won't have to worry about this stuff

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Yep

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Then I'd suggest SearXNG. I use public instances because no one has made a way for me to natively host it myself, but I recommend it regardless

LazerDickMcCheese OP ,

Yeah, that was the error I got from the official install script

LazerDickMcCheese OP ,

Yes, I believe so

LazerDickMcCheese OP ,

Got any tips?

LazerDickMcCheese OP ,

I tried it a few different ways, but I'll run some commands if you point me in the right direction

LazerDickMcCheese OP ,

Thank you! I've tried several distros, I couldn't get Docker to install on of most of them so I'm currently running Ubuntu. It took 5 or 6 guides, but I finally found some commands that let me install Docker. But I haven't found a Docker image I'm interested in that works for me yet. I figured this would be a simple one to start with

LazerDickMcCheese OP ,

Hey, thank you! That's definitely progress. Not I have a new issue because I signed in through Github so not I have to reset a password that I never made haha I'll report back when support helps me out

LazerDickMcCheese OP , (edited )

Thanks again, I got Docker sttup and I'm logged in. I just ran the paperless-ngx script from hub.docker again. It asked me questions, I used the machine's TailScale IP and default port for the URL, but I can't access it as intended so I made a mistake I suppose

Edit: I saved your link for later, thank you

LazerDickMcCheese OP ,

OK, what would you like to know? Everything on my network is connected via TailScale. I have a Win11 PC, a Win10 PC, and a Pi running pi-hole (as an exit node). The Ubuntu distro is running in VM on the Win10 PC

LazerDickMcCheese OP ,

My apologies for taking so long to respond. I've had network issues over the past week, everything has been so slow that low-res media streaming has been impossible. Turns out the Ubuntu instance was choking my resources, so I don't think it could be long-term feasible for me. Regardless, I can't measure my gratitude for you taking the time to troubleshoot this with me

LazerDickMcCheese ,

RethinkDNS is a great option unless you already have something in place that you want to use as well.

For example, I have a pi-hole and a server that I'd like to use 24/7. There's a few ways to do it, but I'm an idiot and need a simple, hard-to-ruin method. So I use the pi-hole as an exit node with TailScale

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Just tried, but I get an "unable to connect" error on all of my devices

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Jellyfin has been the coolest software I've spent time learning, highly recommend

LazerDickMcCheese OP ,

The fingerprint sensor doesn't work most of the time, the light sensor thinks its in my pocket when its in my hand (and thinks that its in my hand when its in my pocket), the battery started draining rapidly within a year of purchase, and much more. Is there an Oxygen release for my phone? When I checked about a year ago, all I could find was an unofficial Lineage release that seemed sketchy

LazerDickMcCheese OP ,

Ah, excuse my ignorance please. I only know about Graphene and Lineage

LazerDickMcCheese OP ,

Yes, I am. To be more specific about the custom ROM, I'm trying to find a direct link to a trustworthy source...because I've looked and couldn't find one myself

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Pi-hole and Simplewall, everything except my phone is running Ethernet

LazerDickMcCheese , (edited )

Just torrented it out of spite. I don't even care about the system...I own one and I don't play it because they got the A and B buttons backwards (that's a joke)

Edit: also, everyone should see this.

LazerDickMcCheese ,

I have permanent Xbox brain, so I'd say they made an oopsie daisy even though I grew up on SNES

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Still, its a weird situation right?

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Agreed, as soon as a diy company starts making affordable CRTs with modern I/O, I'll invest every penny I can

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Modern TVs hurt my eyes after a while, but CRTs don't for some reason. Plus, I like the display more. As I type this, my eyes are bloodshot and tearing up from looking at my tv for a couple hours

What's the real world connection speed from your residential IP to your Server?

I'm using contabo and the VPS I got is advertised as 1 Gigabit. When I do a speedtest or use iperf3 to connect to public servers I get pretty close to 1 Gigabit. But from my residential IP the speed drops down to 100-250 Mbit/s. My home internet connection can handle 500 Mbit just fine....

LazerDickMcCheese ,

My plan is 500 gigs down, but my computer (Ethernet wired to the server) gets transferal speeds of about 4 megs down. Super cool

Movies too dark in HDR?

Since KDE plasma 6 with hdr support came out recently, I decided to check how some of the hdr tagged movies I'd watched previously look with that. I was surprised to see that they are rather dark, even in scenes under direct sunlight. I 'tested' the brightness by opening the movie in hdr and sdr at the same time and manually...

LazerDickMcCheese ,

So I had that issue once, the solution in my case was to calibrate the HDR (not just on the TV), but my receiver and playback device too

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Ooooh I see what you're saying...sadly, I have no idea. I'm not the most savvy guy with this stuff, but your situation sounded familiar. I hope you figured it out

Court blocks $1 billion copyright ruling that punished ISP for its users’ piracy ( arstechnica.com )

One thing that leaps out at me about this ruling is that courts understand the internet a lot better nowadays. A decade or so ago Sony would have probably gotten away with the argument that Cox profited from the users' piracy; nowadays judges themselves use the internet and are going to go "lolno, they probably would have been...

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Fuck em, don't need em. Never have, probably never will

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Others have mentioned other clients, but I'm going to suggest a different, less convenient route. Would you still have that problem if you routed your phone's traffic through an exit node in your home network?

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Can you explain that to an idiot like myself? I'm running TailScale right now and I have my own router in front of my ISP's. Is there a good, simplistic guide for my setup?

LazerDickMcCheese ,

I've tried that, but it's broken my Pi-hole install twice. To the point of needing dev intervention. I assumed it wasn't working for everybody until you mentioned it

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Yeah, I have no clue where it went wrong and I'm not exactly technical enough to diagnose it

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Thank you, I'll give it a go

Have we gone full-circle back to MySpace?

LazerDickMcCheese ,

I've seen a few recommendations for ListenBrainz lately, but I haven't tried it yet so I can't say

How does Usenet content not immediately get DMCA'd into oblivion?

For instance, say I search for "The Dark Knight" on my Usenet indexer. It returns to me a list of uploads and where to get them via my Usenet provider. I can then download them, stitch them together, and verify that it is, indeed, The Dark Knight. All of this costs only a few dollars a month for me....

LazerDickMcCheese ,

I'd like to know too, but people are so cryptic about it every time this shit is brought up that I'm overwhelmed before I even begin. So I just stick to the tried and true methods I know

LazerDickMcCheese ,

I appreciate it! Is it worth the hassle to set up in your opinion? I'm pretty lazy, and that's way more than what I'm used to (1. Install client, 2. Turn on VPN)

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Been using it for years without issue. Get the version with Sponsorblock, it's worth it

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Strange...I haven't had that happen to me at all. I wish I was smart enough to figure it out for ya, but all I can say is that it works for me

LazerDickMcCheese ,

The Nord N10, I bought it because everyone in the store recommended it at the same time. After my experience, I'm pretty sure they were paid to say that

LazerDickMcCheese ,

All of the people I convinced to make the switch would agree with you
