One of the common problems plaguing Apache is that a lot of their software rots on the vine for official support. OpenOffice is one of them, and it came into ASF like that, because the Oracle buyout caused a lot of Sun projects to wither. See also: Solaris and MySQL, which had very public forks.

I let me VPN lapse a day and my ISP reported 11 takedowns. They warned me (because they don't want to lose a customer). Blocklists aren't good enough anymore.

Gnome to a Xfce (me) or KDE user: hey y'all come quick they're doing something stupid again

I think this can be both a benefit and a risk, since Mastodon is still what it is and won't change because of a board. Biz could provide Eugen a lot of insight, but by the same risk, Eugen may want out and turn Masto profitable.

Looking at this from the outside as a non Nix user, I see two things:

  • The community is melting down over something.
  • If this is the state of the Nix community where will the support go when it fractures?

If I was asked to evaluate NixOS for something and saw this, I'd keep looking, because this spells disaster for ongoing maintenance.

No, I think the success comes from Linux becoming normalized in devices like Android and the Steam Deck. We'll see how it shakes out.

I have never used Nix and I don't see its immediate applications for what I do but seeing this has me concerned about adopting it.

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I'm working on a some materials for a class wherein I'll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we're including a section we're calling "foot guns". Basically it's ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

I once had grub and rEFInd installed on the same system and an Arch update hosed both. I was able to fix it with an Ubuntu LiveCD and went back to Ubuntu. I still use Arch in a VM as a treat.

Man, having to setup GPO to stop a lot of stupid horseshit is definitely not consumer friendly, and I don't wanna do it. Microsoft should just stop.

This is not a Japan problem. The only time a European system got sold outside Europe was Korea's KTX, which is a dead ringer from the TGV. The Texas Central Railway was the closest we got to seeing a Japanese bullet train and that proposal is probably dead.

Europe's rail density still promotes Intercity and Regional rail and that's a business Alstom bought into by hook or crook. And they and SNCF, DB etc fight to keep that same graded rail for their bullet trains and intercity over maglev. This isn't going to change, because speed changes stem from capacity, not technical preference. Europe doesn't have the problems Japan has with capacity stemming from density.

I'm a franchise loyalist and I am so, so, so past caring about this New Vegas shit. There's no guarantees that New Vegas isn't in despair off an external shot. And even if it is, I'm interested in hearing how it goes.

Honestly I just use SMB with Samba now it's very fast and secure with the v3 protocol, It gets more complicated if you need AD/LDAP auth but most people don't especially on a home network.

NFS is too much of a pain in the ass. I would not use sshfs unless you need to connect over the Internet and a VPN isn't an option available to you.

Other options like SFTP, DAV, emulating S3 aren't really aiming to fill the same use cases SMB does.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

Substance Painter. Material Maker will get there but its development has stalled quite a bit.

KingThrillgore ,

Its nice they patched this, but isn't the surface area pretty small if you don't use it with a networking stack?

Well, that's just so they stay on top of Filesystem support

Is there a License that requires the user to donate if they make revenue?

I tried a couple license finders and I even looked into the OSI database but I could not find a license that works pretty much like agpl but requiring payment (combined 1% of revenue per month, spread evenly over all FOSS software, if applicable) if one of these is true:...

KingThrillgore ,
@KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah its called an End User License Agreement.

If you pull this shit, nobody will use your application. And don't pull that double dip like Redis is doing, all you're doing is dooming your project.

KingThrillgore ,
@KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml avatar

I definitely understand that paying OSS developers is a growing concern, and if not addressed, a lot of software will go back to being proprietary. The Redis/Terraform double dip is the solution they want, but it just means PlaceholderDB and OpenTofu have to pick up the pieces.

After seeing Starfield i'm not looking forward to it.

Anyone else addicted to Balatro right now? ( www.playbalatro.com )

I'm not usually a huge fan of rogue-likes, but I've enjoyed a few, like Hades. I bought Balatro last week and have been absolutely smashing it ever since then. I love the way the game works, each run being so different even within the same framework, and the feeling when your build starts to go off is so incredibly satisfying....

I don't wanna be that guy, but Lemmy has had, and continues TO HAVE a very noticeable problem with tankies that does impact its reach. None of the people I know want to hang out here because its married to the hip with tankies.

KingThrillgore ,

I feel like its worth pointing out other Mastodon users can block an entire ActivityPub domain if they want. This could be a problem, but you have a great deal of control in how much reach Threads has on your account and instance.

I have accounts on both Threads and Mastodon and will keep using both.
