Or went with the “just go to lemmy.world” approach, got burned because it was struggling to deal with the influx of people and thought “Aw, Lemmy sucks”.
How many times have I personally explained to you that it was the ddos not the influx of people. Every time you find some way to bash on LW and then you come ask for favors?
Didn’t you ask us to make an exception for your bots when we defederated with alien.top almost two months ago? Special treatment AKA a favor, yes.
Anyway you are always arguing in bad faith, just like when you were trying to spread the message that Lemmy World is too big and bad for the fediverse. It wasn’t for the fediverse, it was to push people to your (failing) hosting company. And you are still pushing that same narrative and play dumb when confronted.
If you call this thread a success you are delusional. You’re condescending to everyone that doesn’t agree with your viewpoints. Which isn’t really new to me
I’ve been seeing a lot of users from alien.top commenting in various threads (mainly sports) lately. They only caught my attention because they are all flagged as bots and I typically manually block most bots (not all because there are some I like). For every one of them their entire post history consists of 1-2 comments or...
These bots go against the Lemmy World rules on bots. Yes they need the approval from the moderator but they can not just import unmoderated content from reddit.
Replied somewhere in this thread already but I’ll post it again here. Reddit mirroring bots are not allowed on Lemmy World. We blocked the communities and defederated from the alien.top instance. I’ll add them to fediseer.com later.
It’s a disgusting, terrible instance. Back when I added them to our blocklist and fediseer they even had pedobear on display as if they were proud. They have a MAP community and Pedo memes.
The link posted by OP has our findings in it with a few of their posts on an archive site for those who don’t want to go to the instance directly: (gui.fediseer.com/instances/detail/rqd2.net)
With fediseer you can Endorse instances and then you can follow the blocks those instances do. So for example you endorse lemmy.world and literature.cafe and when either one of them adds an instance to their blocklist on fediseer they will also be blocked on your instance.
You can even follow those blocks just for certain tags. Let’s say you don’t want to follow for “inactive admins” but you do want to follow for “neo-nazis” and “CSAM”.
It’s pretty cool and the functionality keeps expanding. Before it was more like a ring of trust but the developers have really been listening to what the community wanted and there has been a ton of progress. It’s created by @db0 and @rikudou who added the gui and loads of extra features.
You have an account on an instance with a very active admin team. We were even the first one to report this specific instance to the rest of the admins. We didn’t do it in public to not give them any kind of exposure.
As others in this thread have suggested, you can disable NSFW communities completely by disabling the NSFW flag in your user settings.
The amount of people in here claiming there were no takedown requests is a bit frustrating. As if we were blocking those communities for shits and giggles. Sure there was that Bungie troll but around the same time we DID get a takedown request for threads in the piracy community. Threads that didn’t even include direct links, it was just a discussion. Whatever you guys think, it was a lot of shit to deal with on top of what we were already dealing with.
We were also considering different hosting options to counter those DDOS attacks back than and that would mean moving the server to another country and thus exposing members of our team to legal issues should shit hit the fan. One of our team members back then was in the legal team for the hosting company we were considering moving to. So he wasn’t just making this up, he literally wrote the rules.
In the end we decided not to move to that hosting company. And we took some other measures by creating some tooling to deal with this stuff better. And that takes time.
Undoing the block means more work for us too. Work we do for free on our own time, next to having jobs and a families. And we’re definitely not a corporate entity with fancy lawyers.
For those that don’t know what “fosscad” is, it was a community where they were sharing 3D printing schematics for guns and other weapons. Which is an entirely different legal nightmare with different laws in different countries.
I don’t care dude lol. Why should I post this, we have always tried to be as transparent as possible over at Lemmy World. But we’re not going to release documents that would allow doxxing.
Hey Unruffled. I know you had your opinion back when we made that unpopular move too ;) But whatever the users here might think, the contact between most instance admins over on the matrix channels is pretty good and helpful. We might not all allign all the time but there is always respect and understanding. And I think you can confirm that everyone just tries to help each other there no matter what the differences.
I contacted db0 soon after we blocked those communities and have always been in good contact with him since. He understood our situation very well. And as you know yourself Lemmy World has been very active and very publicly pushing the fediseer project. Again, we have our differences but we all want Lemmy to succeed.
Same. Using Linux and FOSS for over 20 years but that Boost announcement thread was toxic. We just started removing those comments and banning them from the community. Those people don’t see those 1000 people that came here thanks to boost will now more than likely come across Linux and Foss related subjects anyway. No need to push it down their throats and push them back to reddit.
Honestly there are people doing this because they know it annoys people.
Ofcourse there were people calling me a “poweradmin” because of it, but I have thick skin 😁 And a large banhammer 😏
As I said a bit lower in this thread, on Lemmy World we recently switched the default view from ‘local’ to ‘all’ for the new sign-ups. But it might be a good thing to do this once, for all existing users. Ofcourse with a proper announcement and an explanation on how to change this to ‘local’ or even ‘subscribed’. It might give communities on other instances a bit more exposure as well.
I would like to point out that @ljdawson has been very forward to the LW team and he has our full support. And while Lemmy itself doesn’t have ads and Lemmy World is running on donations and volunteers that doesn’t mean that every developer should be forced to do charity-work. This is his full-time job and he provided plenty of choices for those who don’t want to pay or who don’t want to pay the full price for Ultra. If that’s not enough, nobody is forcing you to do anything.
I feel that 2 Euro per month for something I use that much isn’t really that bad of a deal. But I just want to support Lemmy and the developers that make this all happen. I also did some donations to other devs (Alexandrite this month) but Sync is the most polished and feature-rich app by far imo.
I’ve ended up with a number of machines on my network, and a need to name them all in a somewhat logical way.
