‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services ( www.theguardian.com )

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

What are the most private social media platforms?

I've been feeling uneasy about the privacy implications of using Lemmy and similar platforms. The ability for anyone to view your entire posting history feels to me like publicly sharing my browser history. In contrast, most other social media platforms allow you to limit your feed visibility to just friends or followers....

It would be much better if the hypocrisy was pointed out in the article. Republicans are responsible for repeatedly taking away protections and supports for the most vulnerable in our society. And most of their voters don’t know or don’t care as long as they’re hurting the right people. This wearing of diapers is a mockery of support for people with disabilities.

Don’t worry, someone will port it to Linux some day.

I think NUC’s internal drive can be upgraded.

USB drive would be fast enough for anything going out to or coming from the Internet.

NAS is a cheap(ish) way to get lots of storage.

I wouldn’t attach storage to my router for the use you’re describing.

I really liked Glassdoor when I first used them to find out salaries. Since “pivoting” and adding the fishbowls or whatever, the site has been unpleasant to use. Reason this users experience makes me sick. I just deleted my account even though I doubt it’ll make a difference. Maybe something decentralized or open source will come along to take its place. Or maybe more laws can be passed to require listing salaries on job listings.

Your preferred distro probably runs great on the 2014 MBP.

That's amazing! I've got the same combination on my luggage!

I don’t know how to do this within the web interface, but maybe this would work:

Sync the folders to a local machine with onedrive.

Crease a CSV with the rights using PowerShell (example: https://www.netwrix.com/how_to_export_folder_permissions.html)

Threema.

It costs $5 dollars, so you’re less likely to be the product. Highly private. Includes some open source code. Audited. Android and iOS. Doesn’t require phone number.

Here are the settings I recommend during first setup:
Tap next instead of making a Threema Safe password
Tap next instead of entering your phone number
Turn off “Sync contacts”

Toyota cars collecting and potentially sharing location data and personal information, Choice says, and it's not the only car brand facing privacy concerns ( www.abc.net.au )

Rafi Alam from CHOICE told The World Today: "When we looked at Toyota's privacy policy, we found that these Connected Services features will collect data such as fuel levels, odometer readings, vehicle location and driving data, as well as personal information like phone numbers and email addresses."...

Didn’t read the article, but is there a guide to opt-out and turn off the data collection?

Zachariah ,

If this defaults to on, I’m turning it off.

I am a longtime Firefox user. I absolutely love many innovative feature Firefox has implemented (such as container tabs). Firefox does so many things better than other browsers, such as allowing CTRL-clicking tabular data for copy-and-paste.

However, I’m usually annoyed by features they add that seem like they’re just doing it to be like the dominant browser.

The worst was when they reassigned CTRL+I from getting page info to match IE’s behavior of viewing favorites. Thankfully, they’ve gone back to the sane behavior.

I am thinking about hosting my own Mastodon server from home on a Raspberry Pi (Pi4 8GB)?

  1. Are there good tutorials out there?
  2. What's the annual cost just to host yourself?

Zachariah ,
@Zachariah@lemmy.world avatar

Check out https://masto.host/ for managed hosting.

You can migrate away from them if you ever want to.

If you self host instead, make sure your server is on its own vlan. Servers are a target for exploitation, and you don’t want the rest of your home devices exposed if your server is compromised.

Note: A Pi probably has the CPU power, but the caching from the server may be more space than an SD card will hold.

Yeah, I meant: isolated vlan

“Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus from conception to 9 months. After that, they don’t wanna know about you. They don’t wanna hear from you. No nothing! No neonatal care, no daycare, no Head Start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing. If you’re pre-born, you’re fine, if you’re preschool, you’re fucked.”

Where are you?

In the US, I’ve found these kinds of jobs on Indeed with the built-in filters.

I’ve also had success with recruiters from Robert Half lining up interviews for jobs that fit narrow preferences. And companies seem to love to give contract jobs to RH.

If I understand correctly, it was originally implemented when they made it so you could use ssl to access your media without any configuration or cost: https://www.plex.tv/blog/its-not-easy-being-green-secure-communication-arrives/

I also think you can watch locally without logging in, but, it’s a less than ideal way of doing it: https://www.plexopedia.com/plex-media-server/general/plex-no-internet/

Unfortunately, the biggest red flag about Plex is that they now offer their own streaming media. That means they’re in bed with media companies which is at odds with the goals and needs of the original fans and users of Plex servers.

When I saw the first slow steps Plex’s encruddification, I was relieved to find out Jellyfin exists. I wish it had more features, but it’s being actively developed and totally usable already. Also, I’m not a fan of the name, but that’s a stupid thing to complain about.

If you’re okay using WINE, EAC is the best CD audio ripping software. Here’s a decent setup guide: https://eacguide.github.io/

Don’t use cddb, use the optional CUETools DB plugin that can be installed during the EAC installation.

You could say “encrudification” if you’re worried about typing bad words on the internet.
