I'm guessing it's the same common issue present on many Gigabyte AM4 boards. The IT8792E (and perhaps others) doesn't work with the kernel driver. There are workarounds but they make it so that other ITxxxxE chips don't work. I have a Gigabyte X570 Ultra and can only use ~half of the fan headers with lm_sensors. I haven't been able to get them all working.

Here's some more info that may be useful.

Edit: or section 6.6 of the Arch wiki link you shared.

Nilz ,

Care to elaborate? Sounds promising

Nilz ,

He states the AAA market is volatile because succes is never guaranteed. Hogwarts did well, but:

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, was a disappointment for the company.

Newsflash: good games people actually want to play do well and bad games no one wants to play do bad.

How are these companies so out of touch?

Nilz ,

Yeah exactly. Also annoying things like "let's change this concept that works by adding stuff that's in fashion but doesn't fit the game at all". Like Battlefield 2042, the concept of Battlefield stayed relatively the same throughout years and releases and it just worked, but they just had to include heroes this time because hero shooters were popular. It doesn't matter that it meant there were only doppelganger heroes running around instead of an actual army of soldiers.

I believe bullshit like this is exactly what made Suicide Squad such a let down.

Nilz ,

How do you do this? Just fork it? I don't know much about GitHub (and alternatives)

Nilz ,

Nintendo would rather want games to not be preserved so people can shell out some money to play a remaster on the next gen or 2.

Follow-up: OpenBSD routers on AliExpress mini PCs

I got lots of replies to the last post showing the little OpenBSD internet gateway setup (super interesting; thanks!). Here's more info and pictures:

Something I've been meaning to share for years now.

@selfhosted

Nilz ,

This is really cool. I've been interested in running something like this. Does it make sense to have this as a dedicated firewall in front of my Unifi lan?

Nilz ,

What I meant was, I have a Unifi router and was thinking of putting a dedicated firewall in front of it. Does that make any sense or would the firewall on the unify be just as capable? Before the Dream Machine that is my current router I was running an opnsense router with my Unifi switches behind it so I'm not super unfamiliar with it I guess.

Nilz ,

You can always try professional data recovery services. It just depends on how much the data is worth to you.

Nilz ,

I love Slay the Spire. It's been a while since I played it on PC but nowadays I play it on my phone or tablet every now and then. I backed the Slay the Spire boardgame on Kickstarter that will be shipped some time soon and I can't wait to try it out.

I think the max I got was Ascension 6, I'm not that good at deck builders I think. The Silent and Ironclad are my favourites and I play whatever fits my mood. Getting insane high block together body slam is just as much fun as getting insanely high poison stacks. I never once made it through act 4 sadly.

The music is also something I really enjoy, it fits the game so well! Sometimes I listen to it while driving or working.

Nilz ,

I love this game so much. The video is very accurate but doesn't mention that once you overcome the hurdles this game throws at you, you can become so damn powerful that your wand can shoot 50 nukes per second that each erase the entire world you are in which temporarily reduces your framerate to several seconds per frame.

Yet you'll still die if you step into two pixels of the purple stuff and something shoots at you while you got turned into a flying sheep.

Nilz ,

I heard there's this website called piratedbay.

Nilz ,

I remember running into this issue back in the day. I think it happens when a mod corrupts game filed and I could only fix it by doing a clean reinstall and avoid the mod that was causing it. Reading through the comments on the Steam guide there are others who ran into this issue and at least one of them got it working by doing a clean install and trying again.

Nilz ,

This sounds really interesting, please share.

First year fully gaming on Linux.

I saw there was a somewhat similar post to this, but I’m kind of celebrating the fact that this was the first year I was able to game exclusively on Linux! I’m very thankful for all of the effort from the people involved in all of the aspects of Wine/Proton, it’s great to not need to reboot to play games.

Nilz ,

Same here! Switched to Linux on my desktop almost exactly one year ago. Let’s celebrate together 🎉 https://sopuli.xyz/pictrs/image/007b404d-99fd-488b-bf21-f4dde3eaecd7.jpeg

Nilz ,

Why Flatpak over the multilib one? Would it be easy to switch to Flatpak Steam?

Nilz ,

The fact that you have the best AMD GPU but are still not able to run it at native 1440p says a lot. You are running it at 75% of 1440p and than have it upscaled using FSR. It runs alright I would say but I don’t think the performance really matches the visuals. It’s clearly not well optimized.

no C6 state on 5950X

I noticed yesterday that my 5950X never goes into C6 state, as Powertop only shows C0 C1 and C2. I know there have been issues with Zen and Zen+ regarding C6 states but it shouldn't be a problem from Zen2 forwards? I tried running zenstates --c6-enable but that didn't seem to work and I couldn't find any settings in the bios of...

Nilz ,

But also one of the worst options in terms of privacy.

Nilz ,

I’d prefer plain Arch over Arch-based since the latter will exclude you from receiving any support from Arch forums.

Nilz ,

To clarify: native Linux support means the game ships with Linux binaries. For non-native games (Windows only) you use Proton. (For some games the Windows version with Proton actually works better than the Linux native version)

The setting you are referring to enables Proton for all games, instead of the selection of games that have a predefined Proton version which has been tested by Valve.

proxmox: Do you use a headless Linux OS as a VM or one with a GUI?

Hi. Since yesterday i selfhosted all my stuff with a raspberry pi and two odroids. Everything works ok, but after i read about a few apps that are not supported by the arm-architecture of the SBCs and about the advantages of the backup-solution in proxmox, i bought a little server (6500T/8GB/250GB) to try proxmox....

Nilz ,

This indeed. To OP: if you use LXC containers using templates that Proxmox provides, they are headless by default. A Gui is a waste of resources.

Nilz ,

This is actually everyone’s complaint about the game. It’s frustrating because the game has a lot of potential otherwise.

Double checking compatibility of new PC ( www.amazon.com )

I am about to make the switch to Linux fully after a brief test period some time ago. Since you are all most likely more tech savvy than I, I wanted to ask if there were any immediate problems you see with this PC for running Linux Mint. I’m not aware of any, but it wouldn’t be the first time I was wrong....

Nilz ,

I would rather use an AMD graphics card over Nvidia on Linux, because of Nvidia’s attitude towards Linux. Other than that there’s not much to say I think, it’s usually the tiny details that are missing from product pages that can make an impact. There’s no mention of which wireless networking chip it uses for example.

That being said. Chances are really low you’ll run into any hardware that doesn’t work immediately without any drivers and if you do manage to run into issues, there are often workarounds. I’ve installed Linux on many devices, mostly laptops, and I’ve never had real problems.

Nilz ,

The only conclusion to make is that the video game industry has matured to a point where only masterpieces are released. Bad games just don’t exist anymore.

Right??

Nilz ,

Jeez, thanks for this blast from the past. I remember a lot of these from my early Linux experiments over a decade ago.

Nilz ,

I agree with top comment. The point of Garudo is to be usable out of the box. Only thing left to do is install software, games and optionally tools to manage Proton/Wine versions. To summarize: Steam + ProtonUp-Qt (to download protonGE for Steam), Heroic Launcher for Epic+GOG games and/or Lutris/Bottles for everything else.

Nilz ,

Also if people pirate a game they can potentially still buy it through official channels later. If they have bought it through grey or black markets then that opportunity is lost.

Nilz ,

I agree with this sentiment. Dual boot on a single drive (or raid0 in this case) can be done but Windows has a tendency to rewrite the boot partition which makes you unable to boot into Linux. I’m sure there are workarounds, but having them seperate is just much easier.

If you install Linux in it’s entirety to a seperate SSD, you select to boot by default into that SSD which should give you the option to boot Windows instead. The other way round is more difficult and tends to break by reasons mentioned above.

Nilz ,

A PSU will be most efficient if the load is close to what it’s designed for. A PicoPSU doesn’t have as many components as say a full ATX PSU and they are all sized for tiny loads.

I have used Pico PSUs on several occasions, more so due to their size than their effeciency. So I don’t think I’d swap a normal PSU out for one. With the difference of just 10 watts you’d probably have to run it 24/7 for years to break even in the cost of purchase.

What's a good, cheap, no external power GPU to buy for VMs? Want to chuck a few in my Dell R730 server to make my desktop VMs more usable. Right now have an old K620 for a Windows VM, seems like 1030s are a good bet since I have a bunch of low profile slots I otherwise have no use for.

Nilz ,

1030’s can be both low profile and passively cooled. They are cheap but their performance is quite low. I think it’s slower then modern integrated graphics. 1650’s are also available without external power.

On AMD’s side you can go for either a Radeon 460 or a Radeon Pro WX 5100. I think those 4 are your best options.

Edit: I think as someone else commented the RX 6400 might be the best option nowadays.

Nilz , (edited )

But still, if I understand correctly, with NAT you can just use one firewall for your router and with IPv6 you’d need a firewall for each of your devices. This seems like a lot more to manage, right? But maybe I still don’t understand the concept of IPv6.

Edit: Apparently I don’t understand the concept of IPv6.

Nilz ,

That’s funny. Imagine how confused they’ll be when/if they find out.

Nilz ,

I've been playing L.A. Noire @45 fps with an fps unlocked and it's been fantastic.
