IverCoder OP ,

I have seen mockups of GNOME adapting a similar banner style as what Flathub. We might have to wait for GNOME 47 though.

IverCoder OP ,

As for the permission popups, they have already done that through XDG Desktop Portals. You might have noticed that, for example, apps with supposedly no filesystem access can still open files you selected via the file picker or opened via the file manager. Or that apps need you to explicitly allowlist them to access your location data. Those are apps that use the portals permission system. Unfortunately not all apps use portals yet.

IMO Flatpak is the best of them all. I don’t want to bother with repo packages that have complete and unnecessary access to my system. Flatpak neatly installs an app and isolates it, and if I no longer want it I can just easily click “Uninstall” on my Settings app without it leaving a mess or any trace behind, unlike repo packages that manage to screw something as simple as uninstalling itself.

IverCoder OP ,

Sorry for the Windows emojis lol, I’m on a computer shop as I post this on lunch break

Evil Wayland is making their app crash

IverCoder OP ,

binex-dsk is now shadowbanned on GitHub

IverCoder ,

The problem is that lack of telemetry is one of the reasons why a lot of distros are still not as good as they can possibly be. FOSS should destigmatize telemetry, for innovation’s sake.

IverCoder ,

I just use Flatpak as much as possible even for FOSS unless it’s not an option (e.g. VS Code).

IverCoder ,

If nobody does that, nobody will be using Wayland to report issues.

Workaround for recent Roblox crashes (for Vinegar) ( discord.com )

Roblox recently released an update that caused freezes on the desktop app. Some cannot open Roblox while others experience crashes after a few minutes of playing. This seems to be caused by a change in their anti-cheat engine, as Windows users with BitDefender experienced the exact same issue....

IverCoder OP ,

Note: The code block rendering is broken on Sync for Reddit. See the web version for proper rendering.

I just hope GNOME’s developers would stop being so insufferable. Lots of Wayland extensions and FreeDesktop portals unimplemented on GNOME because of the developers’ stubbornness. These also adversely affect to other DEs and WMs and Wayland’s evolution itself because other DEs would have less reasons to support a standard if one of the largest DEs themselves don’t support it.

I really love GNOME because it’s polished, but if KDE would be just as polished I will immediately switch. I know KDE works really hard to make the DE and the apps in general as polished and modern as possible, but I can’t still help but feel better at GNOME.

One example is the color scheming protocol by FreeDesktop. You can now make your apps look greenish or purplish or whatever color you want regardless of the toolkit they’re made with. Right? Well no, because the insufferable GNOME developers keep blocking the proposal because they want the colors to be hardcoded by the DE. They were offered a compromise where a DE can just offer a limited, curated color picker to the user when they go to the theming settings and allow any arbitrary color hidden behind commands, but the insufferable GNOME developers said no. And the proposal, last time I heard, is still stalled because of GNOME.

IverCoder ,

Isn’t that hook used by Zoom for screen sharing? IIRC Zoom on Linux only worked on GNOME because Zoom’s screen sharing implementation was to call GNOME’s screenshotting hooks 30 times per second

IverCoder ,

Same for me, but IMO Bottles is better than Lutris.

IverCoder ,

IIRC Netherlands change something in their laws that makes it impossible for them to support any proposals that go against end-to-end encryption technologies.

Where to get Minecraft for Arch Linux from?

Arrrr my fellow pirates. Since I’m very unexperienced with the seas I ask for you guys, where can I get Minecraft from for Arch Linux. It’s not because I’m not willing to pay 20€ but because Microsoft is a giant bitch and I’m not willing to put money in their mouth(especially after they changed their privacy policy).

IverCoder , (edited )

The best solution would be to install Prism Launcher from Flathub. This method is better than relying on downstream projects like PollyMC which may have delayed updates and be abandoned anytime: To avoid having to sign in to Microsoft spyware to play, do the following, credits to this guide:

First, open Prism Launcher, then close it. This is to ensure that the account data has been initialized.

Second, run this command on the terminal:

echo ‘{“accounts”: [{“entitlement”: {“canPlayMinecraft”: true,“ownsMinecraft”: true},“type”: “Offline”}],“formatVersion”: 3}’ > ~/.var/app/org.prismlauncher.PrismLauncher/data/PrismLauncher/accounts.json

Third, open Prism Launcher, press the account button on the top right, create an offline account, and set it as the default account by pressing the Set as Default button on the right side of the list. After this, delete the No Profile account by pressing its entry on the list and selecting Delete on the right side of the list.

Done! You can now play Minecraft without the Microsoft account BS.

Note that I do not support piracy, but I cannot tell you to buy Minecraft first before doing this because I don’t want to be a hypocrite. lmao i didn’t notice what community i’m on lol

IverCoder , (edited )

Using this method to bypass the Microsoft account requirement on pure Prism Launcher is better than relying on a downstream project, IMO. Especially since PollyMC’s releases are lagging behind Prism Launcher (which is expected for downstream projects), and the latest release 7.2 was behind for an entire month.

IverCoder , (edited )

There were some talks to migrating all PolyMC Flatpak installations to Prism Launcher, which was achieved by marking PolyMC as outdated on Flathub’s repo and marking Prism Launcher as the newer version, which will result in Flatpak clients replacing PolyMC with Prism Launcher while moving data over. The only thing users would notice is that the icon and name on the apps list changed, since all worlds and instances would stay in place.

Unfortunately I think they didn’t continue with this decision.

IverCoder ,

Sure, they can try and push their Bedrock version… But nobody is playing on that piece of crap.

As somebody who plays Minecraft very often on my phone, I can say Bedrock Edition would’ve been a very good platform if they just didn’t aggressively push their Marketplace BS.

IverCoder ,

You can literally paste your PolyMC files to Prism Launcher and it will work perfectly

Why are my MKV videos from Pahe now flagged in Windows Defender (Win 10) with a 'Security Warning'? ( lemmy.dbzer0.com )

I just tried opening a video I had gotten from Pahe many years ago, from an external USB drive, and have now gotten a Windows Security warning, ‘Do you want to open this file?’ (see top part of attached image)...

IverCoder ,

If it’s this, it’s likely that the MKV file OP had just happened to hash-collide with a different known malware and caused Defender to recognize it.

Imagine being deaf and having to use subtitles

IverCoder OP ,

Speaking of that app, I have been using it for some of my programs that are only available as an AppImage for sometime now and I can confirm it works really great.

IverCoder OP ,

Tip: take a look at r/Linux and the Phoronix forums 😉

IverCoder OP ,

Ironically, Fedora’s setup becoming the future of Linux makes it easier to tinker.

OCI images used in immutable distros such as Bazzite are very easily customizable and are much safer to tinker with. If you mess up with packages, you can roll back to the previous state and fix it. Mutable distros are also like this, but the recovery process is much more complicated and leaves leftovers in the long run.

See the Tinkerers’ Guide for more details.

You’re the main developer of UBlue, right? 🤩

Why do people still recommend Thinkpads for Linux when there are Linux-oriented manufacturers now?

I’ve noticed in the Linux community whenever someone asks for a recommendation on a laptop that runs Linux the answer is always “Get a Thinkpad” yet Lenovo doesn’t seem to be a big Linux contributor or ally. There’s also at least six Linux/FOSS-oriented computer manufacturers now:...

IverCoder ,

At least you still have a lot of options shipping to Indonesia. Of all the listed options above, only Starlabs ships here in the Philippines 🥲

IverCoder ,

Oh boy, you’re still lucky with your data cap 🙂

Mine’s ~90 Mbps down, ~35 Mbps up, 10 GB open access + 8 GB site-specific of your choice, you reload it weekly for $2.

There’s also a 1 GB “Metaverse Go” bandwidth as well, I have no idea which sites are included in that because when I download updates for my Fedora laptop and download apps from Flathub, it uses that bandwidth.

IverCoder ,

Fedora Kinoite is a good option for you. It’s extremely stable and the software is very up-to-date as it heavily relies on Flatpak.

Kinoite uses KDE. If you want to give GNOME a try, Fedora Silverblue is practically Kinoite that uses GNOME.

IverCoder ,

Either Fedora Silverblue or Kinoite would be great for you.

[Rant] I swear to fucking god. Windows is harder to use than Linux. Have any of you ever USED Windows lately? Holy fuck.

I’m helping a family member build a pc. He wanted to use Windows because “Linux can’t play games” despite me having a perfectly good gaming laptop running Linux that runs all my games, even graphically intensive ones....

IverCoder ,

Rufus has workarounds for the mandatory login.

The answert for this problem is Ventoy.

When I first tried Mint, I had to return to Windows because of Adobe stuff and I still didn’t feel comfortable with dual booting back then.

No matter what I do I can’t get the Windows 11 ISO I flashed with Balena on Mint to work. It boots but when it starts to copy its files to the hard drive it keeps complaining about not being able to read the USB.

I still can remember the burns I got when I cooked my neighbor caldereta for dinner later that afternoon. It was my thank you for him letting me use his Windows PC to burn the ISO to my USB. We sacrifice a lot for Linux lol 😅

Much later I realized that I could’ve just flashed Ventoy and copied the ISO to the USB. Should’ve Googled some more before bothering my neighbor 🙃

IverCoder ,

Windows app for flashing ISOs to your USB. It provides additional options for flashing Windows 11.
