No. This is just a return to the days of the IE-only web. It will be problematic but it won't be the end of the web.

apparently this is in response to a few threads on Reddit flaming Starfield—in general, it’s been rather interesting to see Bethesda take what i can only describe as a “try to debate Starfield to popularity” approach with the game’s skeptics in the past month or two. not entirely sure it’s a winning strategy,...

Without delving into the question over how good the game is, this sounds like a company that simply has the wrong processes in place. A case of "working hard" instead of "working smart." As a result, they waste a lot of time and resources on things that ultimately don't matter. I'm sure the person in question worked really really hard on the game, but it's mostly pointless and ineffectively effort.

Traditionally, the alternatives to Reddit were worse than Reddit. This is the first time that that is no longer true.

You can also make an argument that Reddit was the improved version of Digg. History can repeat itself if the Fediverse proves to a superior model.

Starfield heavily leans on procedural generation. It would be many times bigger if it didn't. BG3 has something like 170 hours of recorded dialogue. Cutting down means getting of features.

So no, there is no room for optimization here. These games are just going to be that big, period. People just need to accept that they will have to get giant SSDs in the future.

It has faster memory than the Series S. More importantly, it has more RAM. A few improvements here and there doesn't make the Series S a real next-gen console.

If they’d taken the Series S as the base line during development, they would have made life a lot easier for themselves.

The problem is that the baseline is actually the PS5. It outsells both versions of the Xbox by a factor of 2. So the Xbox Series S is an afterthought, and always will be.

The biggest advantage is backwards compatibility with existing x86 software. You will lose that with a switch to ARM.

GitHub is owned by Microsoft and it seems to be getting worse. It is also nearly a monopoly and that’s bad in general.

The AD-BASED internet is DYING, and it's getting WORSE in the process ( tilvids.com )

Google has shown that with enough scale, just running ads on a website is enough to keep the content free of charge. But of course, as with everything where money is involved, it went way too far. This limited the ad revenue, and so websites decided to add more ads....

Ever heard of the Dead Internet Theory? It's the idea that bots have taken over the Internet and there are few real humans left. For the whole of the Internet, this is a conspiracy theory. But for any individual platform, it is a totally plausible outcome. Reddit could become one of those bot networks that just pretends to be a social media platform. Twitter is on track for that too.

It's the Dead Internet Theory in action. While it stays a conspiracy for the Internet as a whole, it is definitely true at particular websites. There are many communities which are just controlled by bots and have no real people there.

Does anybody feel like the quality of reddit has already dropped massively? ( kbin.social )

I see a lot of comments from bootlickers on how the protests are dumb and stupid and dont work and engagement metrics are still holding but the quality of posts and comments has noticeably depreciated imo. So much so that whenever I visit the site Im actually shocked at how bad it is.

The quality has dropped noticeably after the blackout. This is trajectory for terminal decline, similar to what happened to Digg. Eventually, it will become so stale and uninteresting, they'll just give trying to make Reddit a community and make it entirely a curated content platform.

It is also why it won't suddenly get better. Even if we fire spez, the motivations are still there. The pressure to make the experience worse will always be there.

    Is anyone else still seeing federated posts even when you turn the federation status to off? I was trying to hide some of the excess meme posts that are coming from other servers. But turning off federation does not make all of them go away. Some federated posts are still being shown.
