ThinkPad x200s. I recently did the USB C charging mod and upgraded to WiFi 6E. I've had Libreboot installed for a while now.

I do wish I could have more than 8GB of RAM though.

I think so. Installing Linux was a hurdle for a lot of people but having it by default on the Steam Deck was a bit of a game changer. Installing Windows on it versus figuring out how to use something Lutris probably takes a similar amount of effort for average casual user.

I feel like it also helps that Windows isn't very controller friendly, in my experience, and an increasing amount of people are looking for that for couch gaming and viewing media.

Another catalyst is one company buying another. I cannot think of one example where the acquired company’s product/services got better after a M and A.

I feel like there have been some positive outcomes of mergers and acquisitions but I am having trouble thinking of them. What comes to my mind is Meta acquiring Oculus, Activision merging with Blizzard, and Microsoft acquiring Minecraft. All of those have led to a shitty Russian nesting doll of launchers and DRM.

The positives might be harder to note though. There must have been a couple times where some kind of acquisition has brought a series into the mainstream.

I know a lot of people prefer the classic Fallout games but I do wonder how people would be aware of the series if it weren't for Bethesda buying the right to Fallout for example.

I don't think it's required by law for a publicly traded company to increase profits. I think that's a side effect of shareholders voting.

If Microsoft held a vote on whether or not disclose a report covering diversity I feel like the board would recommend against it and a majority of voters would agree because it could mean decreasing their stock's value.

There is a thing called ethical investing but that can mean investing in stocks that will see lower gains.

All-in-all I feel like it depends a lot on the core of the company and what percentage of the company belongs to different people.

To be clear: I am not a professional and am drunk. This is just my two cents on the topic.

I'm not sure. Portal and Team Fortress both have really interesting back stories that I think have a bit to do with Valve acquisitions

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

You might be interested in Portal on the N64 while you're at it.

I'd check out Narbacular Drop. Pretty sure that's the game that I'm talking about that became Portal, in a way, later.

There was a good YouTube video about it a while ago but I think it had a clickbait title that makes it hard to find.

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I'm working on a some materials for a class wherein I'll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we're including a section we're calling "foot guns". Basically it's ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

Mostly powering off my system when I shouldn't have. I believe one time I began the process to format a drive I didn't mean to and when I saw the process had started I pushed the power button and just made things worse. The other times were when I was updating.

This all happened when I first started using Linux.

Has anyone here encountered a problem with Fitgirl repacks where it keeps going until it fills your drive?

I was trying to install a repack of The Sims 3 with all of the expansions, full size about 31 GB, onto a drive that had about 300 GB of free space. Left it running overnight, woke up to my computer completely locked up because the repack had filled every single bit on my SSD....

Open source e reader ( lemmy.ml )

I recently got a Sony prs 600 e reader from 2009. The battery is at the end of its life (It lasts about 3 days with heavy reading, and a couple weeks without reading). No backlight, no Wi-Fi, just an SD card that I can load epub files and small PDFs. The screen is slow and the contrast isn't the best. The "touch screen" is the...

Some Kindles can be modded to use KO Reader as well.

MobileRead is my place to go for guides on how to jailbreak kindles for those interested. I'd link to the exact tutorial thread but I'm on mobile and can't seem to find it.

Get free books from Gutenberg/Libgen/IRC/Usenet.

I think Anna's Archive is still pretty popular as well

Do you know of any articles that talk about the patent aspect? This is the first I'm hearing of it and I'd be interested to learn more.

That's a good question. I wonder if there are available user numbers for them.

I imagine it's regional and depends on what communities you are in. SimpleX chat seems pretty popular these days in privacy circles but I could see something like Briar being useful if traditional networks weren't reliably available for example.

I feel like a lot of the military probably uses Facebook messenger because of the convenience.

I imagine everyone is creating groupchats and assuming other people use Facebook just like pretty much every other job.

Totally but people do get careless. We've seen it a few times with the war in the Ukraine. /r/VolunteersForUkraine is a good example of that.

I imagine it could be difficult stressing the importance of it to loved ones.

The 36-year-old has reportedly admitted to committing the crimes at the heart of the ongoing investigation, while providing the justification that he did it to earn a living. According to Automaton, the suspect could face up to five years imprisonment, and/or a fine of up to 5 million yen (over $32,600).

Seems pretty intense but I can't say I'm surprised. If I recall correctly Japan also has laws against console modding

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you'd love alternatives for?

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

TransMac. It's a tool to create MacOS install discs and USBs. It works off of a limited time free trial then you are supposed to pay.

It works great but I'd prefer something FOSS.

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Doesn't that require a computer running MacOS to run?

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Just wanted to shout out https://osgameclones.com/. It has a pretty decent list of them and source ports.

Isn't CPG repacks in the megathread? It has visual novels

Even if there was a multinational effort to stop P2P file sharing I feel like other methods would just be adopted or become mainstream

CorrodedCranium ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

A very good point. I had forgotten about I2P and I don't know a ton about how hosting an onion site works

You are going to be trapped in a room for 12 hours with a mid 2000s office desktop with no internet connection and an external hard drive; what are you putting on the hard drive?

I've got some DOOM WADs I have been meaning to play so I would probably grab Trench Foot, Total Chaos, and the sequel to Ashes 2063, Ashes: Afterglow with a portable install of GZDoom to play them....

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Sorry I forgot to put 12 hours in the title. I made the edit.

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

But what would you play? Or is this an !sbcgaming thing where you'd spend the 12 hours tinkering with emulators?

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Civ is a good one. I have done the same. Would you prefer 3 over 4 if the computer could run it?

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

You don't have 12 hours to grab anything. You're stuck in the room for 12 hours

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Is it anything like MDickie's Wrestling Empire?

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

What a ride. Someone asked what they get for doing this. I guess the answer was not killing your family or being arrested.

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Would you bring the GOG version or the data files and something like Fallout-CE?

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Would you being in the GOG version or the open source engine recreation GemRB?

@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Was Deus Ex pretty good on low-end PCs?

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

You'd rather spend the 12 hours just using whatever is on the computer than bring in some of your ill-gotten gains for some guaranteed entertainment?

CorrodedCranium OP , (edited )
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Also, what do I get from this, anyway?

You don't kill your family or get arrested if you are in this person's position I guess

Speaking of, I wonder what the mid-00s performance for decoding HEVC.

That's a good question. I hadn't thought of how that would play into things

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Any reason why? Nostalgia?

I feel like I had that or the Open Season game at one point

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I checked Steam to see the minimum requirements for Factorio and they are quite low. I wasn't sure if it was going to be one of those games that seems like it wouldn't be demanding but actually is or it slows down significantly as your advance further into the game

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

That's a show that's been on my watch list for years now

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Would you use engine recreations or the original versions of the games?

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Someone further down did mention the 3D GTA games. I'm assuming they mean 3 and VC

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Fair enough. I'm not sure what's in your backlog but there are some gems that can be beaten in a single play session. Titanfall 2's campaign for example only takes 6 hours.

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

No worries HowToBeat is a good website if you want to gauge how long a game might take you.

Every so often I feel fatigued by long games so I'll look for something shorter.

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Part of the reason I posted it here specifically is because you wouldn't need to worry about the limitations of online DRM.

If you wanted to you could read a book, watch a TV show, or play a game. A lack of internet doesn't need to be all that limiting.

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I could probably look this up but can't you play Gothic with just a keyboard?

Have you ever encountered a joke edit of a movie while sailing the high seas?

I have been thinking about the Cerveza Crista edit of Star Wars: A New Hope that sporadically splices in beer ads and the Toy Story 3 edit alternate ending where they fall into the incinerator and it made me wonder if people have come across these kind of joke versions, in full, in the wild....

CorrodedCranium OP ,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Yeah if you check the post you'll see that I linked to an article about it that explained how it came to be and has a few example clips.

It's a bit like "Turkish Star Wars". It wasn't intended to be a joke or a meme but that's kind of legacy it's stuck with.

I have some copies of shows that only received pilot episodes or shorts such as Wet City that I think are pretty rare. For treasured though I've got a journal from when I was in high school. A lot of it's insignificant forgettable stuff like going to the movies with friends but the prompts of setting help me paint a vivid mental image of it that makes me feel a bit nostalgic.
