Linux mint or zorin OS for layman beginners who just want everything to work and focuses on stability , privacy , security ? Also what to do if I switched to mint and WiFi stopped working ?

Hey, so I just put this part up first because this is the one I urgently and importantly need answered even tho I wrote that hideous text block first (sorry English isn't my first language )....

Corr ,

Something to keep in mind is that Linux doesn't have the same hand holding as windows. By all means make the switch but do not run sudo commands you don't understand unless you're comfortable debugging or reinstalling your system.

I learned that the hard way, though I was more than happy to just reinstall and try again. If Linux gives you any warning, please pay attention instead of ignoring like you would on windows.

I think mint is a great choice and I've installed it on my laptop recently and its been working very well. I'm no expert but hopefully if you have any questions I can help you out.

Corr ,

I played hl2 a long time ago (at least 10 years). It was a really good game when I played it and I suspect it will stand the test of time for a long while still.
That said, its not Something I'm especially interested in revisiting personally

Corr ,

Welcome to Linux :)

I also started with tumbleweed in December, but it didn't play nice with my desktop for some unknown reason so I switched to Fedora. Also didn't make much sense to run a rolling release on my laptop so I just moved to Debian on the laptop and it's been great.
I hope you enjoy your experience. Plenty of very helpful people here and forums to find answers to questions you might have later down the road (or tomorrow if you're anything like me).

Corr ,

Linux mint Debian edition. I just wanted to properly try cinnamon since I know GNOME isn't for me and I really like KDE. Other options strike me personally as mostly just downgrades to KDE. It's been very easy, absolutely nothing to complain about.
And the best part is I don't update 2000 packages every time I use it lol (it mostly sat in a drawer collecting dust).

I don't know that there's really much difference use wise aside from the lack of updates. Everything largely looks and feels the same. Debian doesn't have YaST obviously, but I never actually used my laptop enough to appreciate it so idk what I'm missing out on there.

No harm in trying stuff out, especially if you don't use your laptop much like I do.

Simple fix on KDE wayland for windows to remember their last position ( imgur.com )

Thanks to /u/azvasKvklenko@sh.itjust.works for mentioning KDE window rules. In KDE, we can add rules for windows so that they behave in specific ways. One rule that can be added is the position: remember rule, and it's possible to make that rule apply to all windows by removing the match field. This way, closing and reopening...

Corr ,

I was literally just looking this up 30 minutes ago. Incredible timing. Thanks for sharing

Corr ,

Wondering if anyone has an alternative to cursr. That's really the only thing stopping me from making the switch to Wayland full time. I use to make my 2 displays that are different resolutions play nicer

Corr ,

I loved Ori 1 and 2. I hope you enjoy as much as I did :)

Corr ,

I find that while the difficulty is there, its extremely forgiving in that you can create save points effectively at will so it doesn't feel like too much of a chore most of the time

Corr ,

I originally was looking for a hardshell case but stumbled on this while looking. I'm very pleased personally for my lily58.

Corr ,

That seemed like a lot of hurdles to have jumped through but I'm glad you stick with it and that you're enjoying it.

I originally thought people were crazy for using 40% boards, but with home row mods I'm now using 34 keys and I would never go back to using a standing row stag 60% again lol.

Welcome to the ergo split club, and the months of tinkering with your layout until it works the best for you :)

Corr ,

It took me about a week or so once I dropped down to 34. Sometimes I would lose a key and that made me realize it needed to be moved if I couldn't easily remember it.

One thing I found super helpful was configuring autoshift for non-alpha characters. So now I can hold [ to get { for example, or 2 for @. It's helped a lot in reducing the size of my keymap. And as I said, home row mods are incredible once you become accustomed to using them.

If you're interested I can share my own keymap, which might help you come up with some ideas that help you.

Corr ,

Yeah, exactly. It does slow you down just a smidge, but it removes the need to do finger gymnastics to hold shift + layer + tap (in this example) 2. Instead, it's just layer + 2 (hold for like 0.1s). You can also configure it to not apply to alpha characters, which is what I have, so it won't do anything unless it's a symbol or a number.
If you want to hold a character (2), then you tap, release, then hold within a configurable time frame.

I also think you mentioned it, but combos are also really nice, as is the leader key.
Leader key you press it and then you input a series of keys (or just one) and it acts as a new key. I have a lot of macros stored under leader key activations, like wrapping a word in (), or writing "->" or " !=" . There's a deep rabbit hole of customizing you can fall into here :P

Linux for desktop market share surpasses 4% for the first time, says Statcounter ( www.neowin.net )

Statcounter, a website that tracks the market share of web browsers, operating systems, and search engines, is reporting that Linux on the desktop has over 4% market share for the very first time (Statcounter records ChromeOS as a separate operating system despite being based on Linux). Statcounter doesn’t provide any...

Most games so far I haven't had to tinker with. I just switched a few months ago and it's been smooth sailing. That said, I can't speak to using any photo editing software.

I'm keeping windows on my computer now for a piece of software for programming my non-custom keyboard and other miscellaneous windows only things like updating Xbox controller firmware. But it has been a blast and being able to make the PC work for me instead of the other way around has been an extremely positive experience.

Corr OP ,

I just did a kernel update. I'm gonna see if that fixes it, but enabling the SSH server is a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion

Corr OP ,

I updated kernel just now and maybe that will fix it. If not, then I will try reading the logs. Any ideas as to what to look for? I looked briefly through journalctl and I wasn't really too sure what to keep an eye out for. I know red is bad, but everything in red that I looked for didn't seem related (mostly networking stuff)

Corr OP ,

I think it may have something to do with the way I have some apps starting up. I'm gonna investigate that further. Thank you for your help

Corr OP ,

Hey, I know this has been a while, but hoping you might be able to offer some help with what to do from here. I think this is the offending issue causing the issue (but I don't know for sure).
Just wondering if you have any knowledge to share. If not, I can try to dig into this some more solo no problem. This link has the contents of my journalctl log with any mention of discord: https://pastebin.com/f9XGgiq5
Thanks a lot in advance!

Corr OP ,

I originally had the actual package for my distro. The issue is that it updates and then only provides me with the options of downloading a tar.gz or a deb file. I suppose I could just do a remove/install to get the updates, but I was kinda hoping to avoid having to do that

Corr ,

This series is really good. The second game is the only one I've ever preordered. I also bought and played through the enhanced edition right before it came out.

Like a handful of other people in this thread, I found the shift in combat to be a bit jarring, making the game focus a bit more on combat in general. That said, the original combat which was certinaly required was very uninteresting -- mashing 1 button until their HP hit 0 -- so the shift to the newer system wasn't completely unwelcome.

The music and visuals of this game are incredible as well. Both probably in the top 5 of games for me.

Corr ,

I was curious about ZMK but now I already have everything set up exactly how I want it in QMK and I do not wanna pay the cost of switching lol. Maybe one day though

Corr ,

I have never player any of these games but they seem really fun and I think a bit goofy at times too?

As a recommendation for another discussion topic: ori series?

Thank you for making these posts. I think it was a really good idea and creates some fun discourse :)

Corr ,

I think I have the 5th on steam that I plan on checking out... Some time

I tried, I really did

I've been an IT professional for 20 years now, but I've mainly dealt with Windows. I've worked with Linux servers through out the years, but never had Linux as a daily driver. And I decided it was time to change. I only had 2 requirements. One, I need to be able to use my Nvidia 3080 ti for local LLM and I need to be able to RDP...

Corr ,

I'm sure there was a way to disable it but whenever I would hit print screen a one drive ad would pop up on my laptop. It also kept bugging me to update to windows 11, where the options were "yes" and "ask me again in 3 days". I had no intentions of upgrading to win11.

I also don't like many of the changes made in win11, while I haven't used it much I've touched it and it bothered me. Examples include the lack of vertical task bar, the weird context menu, the rounded edges, and the start menu. Plus my desktop PC doesn't even support win11 for some reason so this seemed like a good time to make the switch.

Corr ,

As someone also starting to get into Linux I appreciate these posts

Corr ,

Welcome. I just started using linux recently myself and have been loving it. I would Definitely recommend checking out all the desktop environments to see what works best for you! I've done a bit of shopping and I think I've landed on KDE, myself.
Good luck with the transition!

Corr ,

This was a very cool video. Thank you for sharing!

Corr ,

Did you use the case off beekeeb? I'm building a chocofi soon and I'm using the case on the github and I'm trying to figure out what size screw I'm meant to use to assemble the case

Corr ,

I just emailed them asking about it, since I couldn't see anywhere that mentioned them beyond (screws) on the site

Tried out TW on 2 PCs with very different results

Hey, I’ve gone ahead and decided to try out TW as my first foray into the Linux world, and I started by getting it set up on my laptop. Everything seems to be working pretty well for me (other than wifi passwords not saving by default, but I seem to have found a workaround that’s not too inconvenient)....

Corr OP ,

CPU: AMD 5600X.
RAM: 16GB 3200~~ MT/s ddr4.
GPU: 3070 FE.
MOBO: Some B550 board.

Do you need any other hardware specs? I’m no longer sure if I installed tgw nvidia drivers both times so I suppose that may have been it but I do think its one of the first things I tried to do. Thanks a bunch for replying!

Just moved to Linux: a follow up

I recently made a post discussing my move to Linux on Fedora, and it’s been going great. But today I think I have now become truly part of this community. I ran a command that borked my bootloader and had to do a fresh install. Learned my lesson with modifying the bootloader without first doing thorough investigation lol....

Corr OP ,

I feel your pain :P
I’m almost done getting everything back, I think!

Corr OP ,

You’re right. I spent a few hours trying to fix it before giving up and determined that reinstalling would be quicker lol

Corr OP ,

I was trying to set up snapper, so sorta on my way there lol

Corr OP ,

Time heals all wounds :P

Corr OP ,

I think you may need help… I bid you good luck on your recovery :P

Corr OP ,

I think I know what the issue was… I modified the grub.cfg file and ran grub2-mkconfig and I think it was saying it detected a Linux install at my root partition, but didn’t seem to recognize my /boot or /boot/efi partitions and I couldn’t figure out how to edit that via the grub cli. If that wasn’t the case, then that’s okay. I’ll make sure to teach myself a bit more about the bootloader before trying to edit it again

Corr OP ,

This is why I gave up on fixing it yesterday lol. I spent a few days setting it up, I didn’t wanna spend a few more days to try to figure out exactly what the issue was when I could just give in and then actually use it

Corr OP ,

This is reasonably valid. I think Windows makes it a bit harder to do real damage to your system, so I’m used to that. I also have borked installs in VMs before, but that’s never mattered because spinning up a new one takes no time. Definitely a valuable lesson to do more research before running commands, especially as sudo

Corr OP ,

I’ve been using LO for the past few months in preparation. I was only stuck on MS office for group work

Corr OP ,

I may at some point consider. I’m gonna rock out with this for the time being though, and later down the road if I feel like exploring I can set up a third boot partition. I appreciate the suggstions!

Corr OP ,

I already have a few flatpak apps since a handful of the software I use isn’t in any repo natively. Definitely good advice to check it out

Corr OP ,

Is this not up to date then? I knew that it was a thing that had worked, based on the previous link but did not think it worked atm. I’ll look into the link you sent tho!

Corr OP ,

That’s awesome news! I’m gonna look into this now!

Been Learning on my ZSA Moonlander, but I'm Stuck at 60WPM ( lemmy.world )

I recently got a ZSA Moonlander and started learning colemak dh. It’s been a really fun journey so far and I’m now able to type consistently at 60 WPM. However, as you can see from the chart I’ve sort of hit a plateau at 60 and I’m having trouble breaking it....

Corr ,

How fast were you before and how much practice are you putting in? And where are you at now? I hope you’re enjoying the journey :)

Corr ,

If you're feeling up for doing practice, doing more complex word sets (English 1k-5k for example) will probably yield better results. I find that practice only really shows meaningful results the next day at the earliest once you get past probably around 60wpm.

As to using fewer keys, I'm down to 34 keys for my main layout (still using a regular 60% for gaming), and if it's something you want to explore, I can't recommend it enough. It's been a super great experience and I basically don't move my hands/fingers anymore. If you want some extra inspiration for a layout, I'd be happy to share mine with you.

Glad to hear you're still enjoying it. Keep it up man

Corr ,
