With my little Computer Collection ever growing, I think its time to get myself an actual Monitor to use these Machines. So im wondering, what Monitor has most if not all Connection Types and modes of operation to be compatible with most/ if not all Computer from the 80s till the 90s?...
In the Silicon Valley / San Jose / Bay area, there was a BBS that had a hierarchical message board, Replies were ordered under posts or other replies. In the 80's this was an unusual feature of a bulletin system. The BBS was named for a character from some story. It was a hard to pronounce word/name starting with the letter 'P',...
Up to the 1990s there were workstations designed for software development (Lisp/Smalltalk Machines by various vendors), graphics and CAD (Apollo, SGI), and general purpose systems (Sun, HP)....
Were there any 8-bit era computers that had a 3.5" floppy? They probably would have run CP/M. I do have an apple IIC+, but I also would like some sort of Z80 machine.
I'll be in DFW for a concert in May. Do any locals have recommendations for retrocomputing locales in the area? I.e. used electronics stores, recycling centers that let you take things, et cetera. I know Computer Reset is pretty much done at this point, but I'm from rural Arkansas so I imagine there's still a few good spots much...
It’s a good candidate since it sounds like there’s no precision mechanical components like there would be in a hard drive. Does anyone have ideas for how I’d go about this? Is there a barrier I’m not considering?...
I’ve recently acquired an Apple Macintosh Color Display. Sadly, it’s very yellowed (or rather, oranged). I was thinking about forgoing retrobrighting and just going for painting it. Anybody here who’s done that before? Any idea how I can most closely match Apple’s “platinum” colour?
I’m curious about picking up a mid to late 90’s Sparc desktop/server. Just to keep rounding out my retro collection. I’m pretty much good on vintage macs and PCs and want to get something similar to the servers I used to bounce around back in the day....
I was super excited about it but, now that I missed out on the first batch (yes I would have paid the $500), I’m not sure I’m going to buy it unless I can see there’s a good community around it. The official forum is kind of dull. I don’t have Facebook which, based on what 8-bit Guy has said, is the most active place for...
For no reason other than my own personal satisfaction and to scratch a retro itch (and maybe an excuse to buy a dumb terminal). I’m interested in spinning up a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynix_(software)#/media/File:Dynix-Main-Menu-via-Telnet.jpg from the 90’s. Anyone know if this is abandonware or where I can get a hold...
At the time the original 5150 was released, there were already other 8088 and 8086 systems on the market. And it didn’t really strain the envelope-- no IBM-exclusive chips, and the whole 8-bit bus and support chips angle....
Does anybody have any experience of trying to fit internal storage into their ST? I'd prefer to have everything all in one unit drawing from the internal PSU if possible. I'm using a 1040 STFM....
I grew up in the 70's & 80's. My first computer experience was the Atari Pong console, but my first real love was the Commodore 64. I would buy up all of the C64 magazines I could, especially if they had the game code article where you could type in the machine code to make a game. Machine code. I don't think I ever saw a BASIC...
I own a Sharp PC-1251. Untill a few Years ago it was in full working condition, then the LCD deceased. Ist there any chance to replace or repair this with moderate efforts? I miss my BASIC-spaghetti-code and the micro-cassette drive for storage ,,, https://lemmy.sdf.org/pictrs/image/9a2ef90d-e555-42cf-ac1a-cd26c494ed72.png
I’m all in for this hobby. For years now I’ve been messing around with emulation, but now I’m thinking about building the 486 computer I dreamed of when I was a little boy....
