AliExpress isn’t the problem here. This is fake Shopify sites spun up and down in a matter of days that only exist to harvest info and payment. I’ve placed dozens of AliExpress orders, I always get what I ordered even from new stores.

Yeah because PlayStation Now, OnLive, Stadia, xCloud, GeForce Now & Luna were such rousing successes.

When are people going to realize that the AAA gaming crowd just isn’t interested in Cloud gaming? They have oodles of disposable income, “cost” is not a real barrier to entry for this group.

Microsoft should abandon the Xbox and offer some kind of BC program, I agree with that. But any box is as good as the next. Offer xCloud and game streaming on everything, stop making hardware, and publish games for PS5, PC, and Switch where it makes sense.

Maybe it’ll take off, maybe it won’t. But the actual console part of the business isn’t doing them any favours, they’re just PCs sold at crappy margins now.

All I’ll say is that it’s not much of a “fediverse” if you just preemptively defederate from anyone trying to grow it because you’re scared of what might change. More of a “fediclub” at that point.

Really kills the “it’s like email!” metaphor when you defederaters are constantly trying to break that interoperability by stirring up FUD and blocking instances for theoretical stuff they haven’t even done yet.

It’s like email except your server admin might decide one day they don’t want you to talk to anyone who has an @gmail.com address because they don’t like Google. What fun!

Yep, the Reddit metaphor really backfired. If Reddit joined the fediverse I would happily consume their content. It would actually be a wonderful compromise where reddit wouldn’t have to provide direct app support and instead just publish out via ActivityPub and people could build third party clients through that.

I left Twitter because they killed Tweetbot and I left Reddit because they killed Apollo. I genuinely hate the experience of those sites with their native apps, and I use these kinds of services almost exclusively on my phone.

While I also hate Elon Musk and Spez, I strongly dislike most tech CEOs so while a motivator, it wasn’t the biggest factor for me. It’s important to remember we’re not all here for the same reason, and user-level instance blocking is the real solution here.

You don’t like some fediverse member? Then block them at the user level and move on, or start your own server and block them there. Don’t force everyone else on your server to not even have the option just for you.

Not a lot. Simpler signup flow and ecosystem, more twitter-like timeline and features, better discoverability and some communities that aren’t on Mastodon. FOSS diehards can mince about it all they want and blame idiot users, but the simple fact is people who don’t live and breathe technology still have lots to offer a social network, and Mastodon continues to alienate them in design and in community. Lemmy does too.

I like Mastodon and Lemmy, a lot. I prefer them to the alternatives. But I just signed up for BlueSky and I’m enjoying it a lot even routed through the Mastodon bridge, simply because there are more diverse communities there, whereas my Mastodon feed is 90% tech and dev people despite spending hours and hours hunting for people I used to follow on Twitter. Getting big App.net flashbacks.

Underlying technology is completely different. One is Swift, one is React. It talks about this on the GitHub.

This is one of those cases where two is better than one, because not everyone can contribute to a Swift app, and multiple projects isn’t splitting effort, it’s bringing on people who wouldn’t otherwise be involved at all.

Plus, probably worth having a few going just because there is so much activity now. Mlem is moving a little slower than I had hoped so while I’d prefer a native Swift iOS app, this one is already a little more functional and it’s the first release.
